Are you colour conscious i.e not racially discriminatory, but when buying something like a peripheral for your system? If, say, the system was black and you wanted an item, but the item was dearer or unobtainable in black, would you buy in another colour?

I would certainly consider it. But it would depend on the precise needs as well as price & colour and how essential each of those were. It's very much on a case by case basis - no pun intended

I would hope that the colour of an item didn't colour anyone's decision on what to buy, it as no relevance on form or function whatsoever, and it would be a very sad individual that made a conscious decision not to buy an item because of its colour, and one would hope with the money they saved they could maybe invest in some therapy for themselves.

Again that rather depends on what it is! There's no way I would by a 3 piece suite for example that was coloured pink with yellow spots (yes Mr. Blobby) just because it was £100 rather than the colour of my choice at £400. It's not quite so much what I would tolerate from a visibility point of view, but more to do with the ear-ache I would not tolerate from you know who
Edit: If I had to be subjected to the ear-ache, I'd definitely need the therapy

I'd prefer if my router were a subtle/inconspicuous grey/black or similar but it's red and silver so I just put up with that (at least it isn't white and pink ).
I recently (in the last year) bought a monitor in white because it was less expensive than the black one, if the price had been the same I'd have had the black one but the white one has stayed surprisingly clean and new looking so I have no regrets about saving a few quid.

Depends on what it was
If it was a replacement DVD drive then it would have to match the case colour as an example

Reading this thread reminded me of my old friends car.
Back in the day he bought a mark 1 escort. Lovely car but it was a radioactive green colour.
Easy to find and spot but not easy on the eyes.

I agree.
It doesn't matter to me if I have a white cable charging my black and gold Samsung phone for example.
I prefer black peripherals (so glad things have moved on from the PC beige we all seemed to have been stuck with in the 90's) but mainly because they don't show up the dirt/dust so much

My daughter wouldn't have any of the current crop of PN routers in the house as her 'colour scheme' is predominantly black so she has an Asus.
Personally I tend to go for black as a subdued colour rather than loud reds and oranges.

I bought several things last year in "the wrong colour" because they were substantially cheaper than "the right colour", I drew the line at saving money on the keyboard of choice through buying an annoyingly garish colour though, not because I don't like reflective colours but the glare coming off the keyboard would distract me too much, I went for a muted dark colour one instead because despite not being as cheap it was still cheaper than black.....
on the other hand utilitarian items like the kettle the toaster or an other appliance can be whatever colour is cheapest because If all else fails there's always white fablon to wrap it with......which might explain why we have a neon green cafitere a pill box red toaster an electric blue kettle and various other non matching colour appliances scattered around the kitchen and similar things have happened in other parts of the house, because the price was better in that colour .....

yeah I just got lucky I guess, mine knows that its better to get the right item at the right price rather than fret over the colour so much, having said that it must wind her up a lot cos she has o have all the labels facing the right way and arrange the cupboards just so ..... I tend to chuck stuff wherever it fits and she goes nuts over the smallest thing in that regard.....
but she does get her "colour scheme" to work in other parts of the house, although i'm in trouble since my new monitor has a white and green body whilst the tv has a grey one which don't match the décor ...... I offered to swap for the correct items but when she saw the price difference was several hundred quid she backed down to a low smolder ..... I rather suspect i'll pay for it in some way over the coming months until she stops "noticing" the mismatch, which is pretty much what happened with the kitchen

But an elephant might want red nails. Remember these from decades back?
Q: Why did the elephant paint its fingernails red?A: So it could hide in a cherry tree.
