Are you able to do this.

It Has been claimed that the majority of young people are unable to undertake a range of tasks that most of the older generation did.
Have you ever undertaken or consider yourself able (without help) to do the following.
1. Change the fuse in a household plug.
2. Change a wheel on your car following a puncture.
3. Iron a shirt
4. Plumb in a washing machine.
5. Change the processor on a motherboard.
6. Change break pads/disks on your car.
7. Cook a Joint of Beef.
8. Undertake a long car journey on A Roads without the use of a sat nav.
9. Get up, washed & Dressed and out of the house before 6 am on a regular basis.
By all means add to the list if you wish but do not mention the DM as hardly a post goes by without some reference to it.  Smiley

Re: Are you able to do this.

Over a long period of my life, I have done all of those things, and consider myself a Daily (Male) for doing domestic stuff....
Washing my own clothes,
Cooking for family
Cleaning house
Chopping Wood

Re: Are you able to do this.

Well, I must admit I can only do 1, 3, 7, 8 & 9. I don't get my hands dirty with cars apart from washing/waxing them & let the computer geeks do you PC stuff for me (oh & the plumbers do their stuff) !

Re: Are you able to do this.

I've done all of the things in the Ops list Smiley
1) Some people seem to think green is live.
2) Usually happens when it's cold, wet and dark.
3) Tee shirts I find problematic
4) Kids stuff...if replacing an old one. If not then the fun starts.
5) If it doesn't go in easy it's the wrong way round.
6) I won't pay a garage for such a relatively simple task.
7) The hard part is finding the money to buy one Shocked
Cool 'A' roads can be quicker than 'M' roads these days.
9) Can't you make it 7 am, I don't have far to go.

Maybe you should add: reference from an encyclopaedia (not online).

Re: Are you able to do this.

Sad Wotever
Anyway, I shall endevour to defend them yunguns...
Tongue Change the fuse in a household plug? There are no fuses in their world, it's all rechargers.
Sad Plumb in a washing machine. A task that frequently defeats men who work for Currys Knowhow
Wink Change the processor - Moot point as you can't open up a Smartphone. Except to change SIMs to access porn.
Shocked Cook a Joint of Beef. Young people eat healthy... at Subway and Burger King.
Kiss Undertake a long car journey on A Roads without the use of a sat nav. Come on, when was the last time a grown-up did that?
Huh Get up, washed & dressed and out of the house before 6 am... Youngsters are not mornings people. I am also a young person.
Lips are sealed Iron a shirt Creased is the new smooth. I am smooth too.
Angry Change a wheel on your car following a puncture and change break pads/disks on your car. Moot point. Cars are no longer affordable to young people; thanks to that jaunkar politician from Sheffield. We all know who he is. And I bet there's PlusNet staff who voted for him.
For the record, there are many-many able and capable young people out there, it's just that BBC3 doesn't make programmes about them.

Re: Are you able to do this.

Well here goes..

1. Change the fuse in a household plug. Yes! I can even change a fuse wire in the fuse box too!
2. Change a wheel on your car following a puncture. Yes! - I can even jack it up too!
3. Iron a shirt If I'm really forced to..
4. Plumb in a washing machine. By eck, yes I can - does that still impress people these days?
5. Change the processor on a motherboard. Yes! and if I'm really good the machine will still work after!
6. Change break pads/disks on your car. Done that in my life too..
7. Cook a Joint of Beef. McDonalds do that for me with their 100% prime beef so there really is no need  Wink
8. Undertake a long car journey on A Roads without the use of a sat nav. Actually yes!
9. Get up, washed & Dressed and out of the house before 6 am on a regular basis. If I'm working  Wink

Tip for shirts - hang them up on a coat hanger to dry as soon as they come out of the wash and they don't really crease up much!
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

6. Change break pads/disks on your car.

All of the others are trivial, that one (on my car) requires some serious professional equipment and diagnostics computers.  Crazy
Though for #2 I'd probably call out my breakdown cover, definitely on a motorway (why take the personal risk).
And being a vegetarian #7 I'd prefer not to....

Re: Are you able to do this.

All except iron a shirt.
Never mastered it and always just put stuff that would require ironing straight on hangers to dry as taught by my dear old mum years ago

[Pedant Mode]
Should be brake pads.
Did you mean disks or shoes?
If disks it should be discs.

Re: Are you able to do this.

Coming from an area of coast and country (Filey, North Yorkshire) I would like to add, gutting and filleting fish, dressing crabs, gutting rabbits, chickens and gamebirds. Also the various methods for killing such.
How many of the younger generation think meat comes from Tesco and can't do the honest thing of killing and preparing what they are going to eat for them and their family.  Smiley
