Are you Smarter than a 10 Year Old?

Don't suppose anyone watched this tonight did they... I have a query about one of the questions, which was the one about '5 + 3 * 0' where they accepted the answer of 0...  but my thoughts would be that it was 5.
I may have misread the way the question was written, as I just caught it when I popped through from the kitchen, though... will need to catch the repeat to check, but was hoping that someone here might have seen it.

Re: Are you Smarter than a 10 Year Old?

Depends how it was presented.
(5+3) * 0 = 0
as (5+3) is 8, and 8 * 0 is 0.

If it was 5 + (3*0) then it would be 5, as it is 5 + 0.
Hope this helped.

Re: Are you Smarter than a 10 Year Old?

If you use a scientific calculator the answer will be 5, if you use a cheap calculator it will be 0.

Re: Are you Smarter than a 10 Year Old?

There's an order to which calculations are done first iirc (A level maths dontcherknow... haw haw haw) and though I can't remember it in full I know that multiplication is done before addition so the answer should indeed be 5. I'd check wikipedia but I'm afraid I can't be bothered at the moment.
EDIT - my god, there's a lot of maths on wikipedia - so much in fact that if you can't remember what whatever you're searching for is called you won't be able to find it. Though a GCSE maths revision site reminded me: (copy and paste ++)
BODMAS (/BIDMAS)
When simplifying an expression such as 3 + 4 × 5 - 4(3 + 2), remember to work it out in the following order: brackets, of (/indices), division, multiplication, addition, subtraction.
So there we are.

[me=Colin]knows what the answer should be but isn't sure whether the question was worded differently.[/me]
[me=Colin]also thought he was taught BOMDAS, but could be wrong Smiley[/me]

Apparently I lied about not being bothered... thanks all.

Re: Are you Smarter than a 10 Year Old?

It's BODMAS but it does not make any difference if you do the M before the D. Also it does not make any difference if you do the S before the A. What you can't do is to do the AS before the DM. BODMAS

Re: Are you Smarter than a 10 Year Old?

What does BOLOR say about BODMAS?
B.

Re: Are you Smarter than a 10 Year Old?

First perform any calculations inside parentheses. If nested brackets then inner brackets first.
Next exponents (or radicals).
Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

Well it's good to know that we beat out the 10 year olds (or at least equalled them) in smartness.
For the record, BOLOR acknowledges BODMAS as necessary in a universe that contains numbers and therefore mathematics, but otherwise ignores it.

We recorded it on Sky+ and the exact question was :
Calculate 5 + 3 * 0
so you are correct under BODMAS, the answer should be 5.

Re: Are you Smarter than a 10 Year Old?

I agree, I prefer BOMDAS (Brackets, some random O, Multiplcation, Division, Addition, Subtraction)
So technically, yes, I would have said five, but it depends purely on presentation. I watched it, but i cant remember how it showed.

Re: Are you Smarter than a 10 Year Old?

I always used BIDMAS, primarily because I could remember that I stood for indices and never actually remembered what O stood for.

Brackets Off Multiply Divide Add Subtract was how I was taught it...
