Re: Are there gritters in London

It started here in Sheffield yesterday and worsened today. It's forecast to continue tonight until around 4 am.
I'm dreading tomorrow morning's journey to work.

Re: Are there gritters in London

We've had 6" of snow here in Essex today.  It's stopped snowing this evening but more is forecast for tonight.   Sad

Quote from: Alex
For anyone commuting into London, my train company have finally given details of their 'limited' service tomorrow (South Eastern trains).

Yeah, I saw that earlier as I use South Eastern too... well, them and NXEA. Oh, and the tube. Plus a bus. Which probably means you can guess what I'm going to say - tomorrow's commute to uni looks fun. Huh Still, at least TfL have managed to get some non-central bus services up and running now.

There are no gritters in operation in London,  due to the inclement weather.  Grin

Re: Are there gritters in London

not entirely true, jeremy.  there was one man and his shovel clearing the path and spreading salt.  two small patches of pavement at a t-junction.  the snow on the road quickly turned to black slush after enough cars had been over it.  it's pretty treacherous underfoot for anyone unsteady on its feet.
there was a slight thaw during the day that saw great lumps of snow slide off slopes and drop off trees, even though it continued snowing all day.
just gone midnight and it's now freezing and conditions will be much worse tomorrow if it snows over the ice.
i'm hunkering down and staying indoors for as long as possible.

Re: Are there gritters in London

I seems that the expected heavy snow didn't materialise everywhere.
I looked out the window this morning expecting about 20cm of snow, only to see it had all melted. ( Perthshire )
and the warnings have reduced to "just prepared" in a few areas

Re: Are there gritters in London

More light snow promised for today but heavier falls later this week Sad
Just been out and all the major roads are clear but not the side ones here in Essex.  Strong sunshine is melting the snow but this will be a problem later when it freezes.

Re: Are there gritters in London

Public Transport still not looking that great.
My train company said they'd run a limited service every 30 minutes.
My friend and my sister couldn't get into London today - told me there was actually no trains running at all from their station.

Re: Are there gritters in London

Is it mainly the "Southern Region" - DC third rail and Undergound affected, or are overhead wired lines north of the Thames affected the most?.

Re: Are there gritters in London

It seems the overheard lines aren't being affected too badly - my local rail company uses them and I've read no reports of overhead line faults. As usual their trains are breaking down though, which I suppose could have something to do with overhead cables (pantographs failing?), or it could just be that the trains are old and rubbish.

Re: Are there gritters in London

Yeah we're all 3rd live railed here.
I guess that poses a greater problem with the snow.
