Are dishwashers really worth the money or space ??

Every year SWMBO says we need to purchase / buy / invest / install a dishwasher & all other (trying to convince me spiel)
I can not justify the overall costs (including the tablet things that the use) where MGFL suffices quite well

Tablets are cheapish no?
Saves time and is hygienic so dishwashers get my vote.

Two people do not make enough dirty dishes, even if cooking utensils are included, to justify the expense of the machine, and the tablets ( on going cost ).electricity ( ongoing cost ).... .. you will still need the old washing up bowl and washing up liquid for doing the " one off " .....
a dishwasher needs to be full to make it worthwhile, ( then it is debatable cost wise )... so you would need to have huge reserves of crockery, whilst last weeks is still waiting in the machine for this weeks offerings to fill it up...

This isn't going to help
A total waste of space and I never use it when SWMBO is away
An absolute godsend and I wouldn't be without it - SWMBO

All depends on what end of the washing up duty you are..
A lot of stuff here gets done by hand.. Pots and pans that get multiple uses over the week usually done by hand.
Plates/bowls/cups/mugs/cutlery go in the dishwasher and run when its full.

Had one in the past, a total marvel and joy to be honest. The only gripe is that they don't load and unload themselves...
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Yes there is that.. But I always do the 'easier' bottom shelf as that has the 'heavier' items. And leave all the 'lighter', more difficult to stack stuff Smiley

One word - Bollards!
It's nowt to do with cost - it's about freeing up the time for other things. Like scratching your bum and postulating the next increase in Bank Rate!  Wink
Had one for over 30 years and wouldn't be without one for all the tea in China!
Got the first one when we had four kids, now it's just we two!

We had a free one with the MFI kitchen (remember them) and it's been used 4 times... that's the number of Christmases since we've had it!
The tablets are rip off, and tbh it's a waste of space.
2 minutes to clear a sink of dishes... who is so busy they can't do that?

Plus I heard that
The dishes has to be rinsed prior to being placed into the dishwasher
Therefore, the time it takes to rinse can be simply utilised into washing the dishes
INMHO
Dishwashers are suitable for
Disabled / infirm / elderly, that struggle to stand @ the sink
Lazy people that are just plain lazy
Workaholics / large families that literally & genuinly do not have the time, between the ironing school runs etc

I have one and its an absolute godsend ever since the twins were born in more recent years it ensures clean dishes and yet still allows the kids to do the washing up as a daily chore towards earning there pocket money, the last time we didn't have one the family ended up with thread worms and that was about 9 years back ......

@torpc re your last post
only if you get an ultra cheap one designed about 2 decades ago, the decent stuff now (especially with the finish quantum tabs ) will clean anything regardless of dirt level so long as the filter is cleaned and the plates /dishes were scraped into the food waste first !

Re: Are dishwashers really worth the money or space ??

Sorry to hear what happened when you did not have a dishwasher
However that is not the case for every household
What about the running costs
Especially when
Electric ====> Gas Boiler ======> Hot water for washing up in the Sink
Electric ====> Gas Boiler ======> Hot water ====> More Electric to run the Dishwasher
WUL V's Tablets
As I see it with
WUL you can use as little as you need
With Tablets You use a whole tablet each time

Re: Are dishwashers really worth the money or space ??

there's no hot water costs as they run on cold water and the current generation of eco units use less water than a full sink and cost less than heating up the water for a full cycle, yes you use 1 tablet per wash and for us that means 16p per day at a rate of 1 tablet per day and less than 15p in electric, on top of that is uses less water than handwashing and stuff comes out clean....
compare that to 2 bottles of fairy at £2 each per month and 5x as much on heating the water for hadnwashing and your looking at substantial savings * I do have bosch eco machine that cost a packet but its well worth the capital outlay in terms of savings over the projected 5+ year lifespan
