Are Sledges Redundant

I was reading sections of the Global Warming thread and I thought....
When I was a youngster in the early 50's I had a sledge as did all the kids in the neighbourhood.
If memory serves, virtually every year they would come out of storage, have their runners polished and get quite a good few evenings use after school and a few solid weekends also.
Am I remembering the good times and forgetting the 'bad' as these days no-one seems to have a sledge or need one as there is nothing to use it on. Sad

Re: Are Sledges Redundant

We only ever had homemade wooden sledges.
They were used on the Downs, in the summer mostly, grass sledging.

Re: Are Sledges Redundant

We had snow in Derbyshire virtually every year.
I used a candle to polish the runners for maximum speed.

Re: Are Sledges Redundant

Was really amused yesterday.... was in another ASDA carpark, after all the snow had gone from the roads and pavements, also from most of the "sunnyside hillsides too..... lady came out of ASDA with her shopping trolley containing two plastic kids sledges.  Grin Grin! ! ! I guess the kids will be too old to use them next year ! Roll eyes

Re: Are Sledges Redundant

I suppose when I started the thread I was thinking more of South Yorkshire.
Now it appears to have gone global Roll eyes
OK....what about the polar caps of Mars. If they are composed of ice as the theory suggests then Martians will need sledges. Angry

Re: Are Sledges Redundant

How short your memory is.
Railway Station Passenger Bridge Bottom Step Appreciation Society
Anyway it's now been disbanded as the introduction of escalators has meant that every step becomes a bottom step many times a day and the membership was getting confused.
