Arctic sea ice at a record low

Although we have had a very cold December, some places have had an very unusually warm December leading to a record low growth of sea ice in the Arctic.

Re: Arctic sea ice at a record low

It's that stupid jet stream getting lost on it's way across the Atlantic.

Re: Arctic sea ice at a record low

That explains our cold spell but not

Air temperatures over eastern Siberia were 6 to 10 degrees Celsius (11 to 18 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal in December. Over the eastern Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Baffin Bay/Davis Strait and Hudson Bay, temperatures were at least 6 degrees Celsius (11 degrees Fahrenheit) higher than average. Southern Baffin Island had the largest anomalies, with temperatures over 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit) higher than normal.

Re: Arctic sea ice at a record low

we are living in interesting times.  critters are falling out of the sky; fish are littering beaches; whales are beaching themselves; some places are awash; others washed away.  we're having a high old time.
time to go look at the footings of various dams, methinks.

Re: Arctic sea ice at a record low

As I understood it that same jet stream first travelled north carrying milder air to the northern Canada and Greenland areas before dropping down to Europe.
This is a major shift in it's normal route and a cause for study.

Re: Arctic sea ice at a record low

I'd like to see a chart showing when the hottest, coldest, wettest and driest month on record for each of the 12 months (obviously excluding the driest for the summer months). Statistically those potentially 48 events should be evenly distributed over the 100 or however many years it is the records have been going. If a significant proportion of those are during the last decade say it would demonstrate that the climate is becoming more chaotic.

Yes! in terms of solar activity, age etc. probably a fraction that is either infinitesimal or unmeasurable. No doubt one of the forums mathematical genius's will work it out for us
Are the wind farms blowing the airstream up and over? got to be a man-made reason for it eh!  Roll eyes Roll eyes.
Remember El Nino of a few years ago?
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: Arctic sea ice at a record low

I wonder if there is an oscillation  here or it is due to the well known fact that feet get colder than heads  Grin

Re: Arctic sea ice at a record low

I'd feel happier if that balanced the Arctic loss of -3.5% per decade!
