These elections should have taken place alongside other elections and at a more appropriate time of year.  November has never been a popular month for turnout.

Pleased to see my first choice candidate won and Michael Mates lost.
Of course I could have stayed at home with my fingers crossed.........
But what sort of message does that send exactly?
That you don't care if a loony gets in with just a handful of their supporter votes?

These elections assumed the public wanted the change in the structure of the police. I suspect the turnout would have been higher if we were allowed to vote for "None of the above."

I read the number of spoiled ballots was the highest ever.  I must say I can't understand anyone going all the way to the polling station and then wasting a vote.

Why not?
In some jurisdictions there are "none of the above" or similar options, it's roughly equivalent. A type of "protest" vote.
The spoiled ballots are counted and reported (obviously, we know them) and are a significant message.
I was very close to doing that, but in the end actually just walked by and went to the pub (where I was heading anyway).
I think this is the first time ever (in many decades) that I've not voted in an election that I was eligible to do so and available.  
What I didn't realise is that spoiled papers DON'T count towards turnout, but are reported accurately.
I thought that if I spoiled my paper it would still count in the turnout numbers; if I'd known better I would have delivered a spoiled ballot.
