Anyone else done advanced Driver Training ?

Anyone else done advanced Driver Training ?

I don't just mean courses like the one the Institute of Advanced Motorists run.

I mean really advanced Driver Training.

Like high speed and evasive manoeuvres.

When I bought my first Automatic Jeep, I attended a 4x4 event, and spent the day driving round a course, along with an experienced driver, who instructed me in all aspects of 4x4 driving.

The course involved ascending & descending steep muddy hills,  and use of the gears, and non use of the brakes in descent, and driving though deep water.

The water was up to bonnet height.

It was a strange sensation, as the Jeep felt like it was floating, but by just keeping moving, we never stalled.

It was extremely informative, and stood me in good stead for the future.

My annual Police high speed training course comes in very useful sometimes, as does the Government sponsored Escape & Evasion training, undertaken as part of our Government Contract requirements.

My ex-Police driver and I keep each other up to date on the latest techniques.

We have some interesting trips !

And we have great fun off road circuit trials.

Again it is great experience & knowledge to have.

I learned how to do J turns, amongst others escape manoeuvers.

The high speed training was particularly exhilarating.

Particularly the observational aspect.

Though, of course, not usable very often on UK roads.

A trip along German Autobahns was an experience !!

As was driving in the Dominican Republic !!

And as for the Arc de Triomphe .......

All good experiences though.

Re: Anyone else done advanced Driver Training ?

Is that another one that gives you a sticker to display on your car?

I used to have a 'I've been to Littlehampton' one on mine. Smiley

When I saw you parking your Jeep outside your Chelsea mansion the training showed. Wink

Re: Anyone else done advanced Driver Training ?

I thought all parking was done autonomously these days! Just drive past where you want to park, select park and the car does it all. Parking. Another thing they can get rid of in the driving test.

Mind you, I could probably do with evasive driving. Could come in handy driving down the country roads around here. Certainly need it for the pot holes (more mine shafts than pot holes) and I might have missed the pheasant that came flying over a tree to land about 5 metres directly in front of the car.

But does it really help in normal traffic. Hardly.

Driving home one evening, dusk time, along the M62 to the M6 Junction, I saw this large white object come out of nowhere, and hit the side of the Jeep.

There was a terrific bang, and I expected damage to the Jeep.

I stopped, inspected the Jeep, no damage at all.......

But there was a Goose standing nearby.

It flew off, so no real damage to either party.

Just some Goose dust on a rear window.

(Birds used to fly into a large picture window at home, you could see the outline of the bird in dust on the window)

But it was still a shock !!

You are quite right.

I do a regular thirty mile run into Carmarthen - mostly at around 30, and never over 50 as more often than not you get stuck behind a tractor or truck with little chance of overtaking even you wanted to. What's the point - but of course folks still try at times.

Take your time, hang back with plenty of room in front.....and assume everybody but yourself else is stark raving mad and should never have been let loose on the road!

Advanced driving? Not around here that's for sure.

Strangely enough I've done skid pan training, but my performance would not go down in history.

That IS advanced driving techniques..... learned through years of experience,  it may be a long course, but it proves itself time and time again.

I'd always fancied taking a Jim Rockford advanced driving course but sadly one doesn't exist.

Re: Anyone else done advanced Driver Training ?

I use the Jeep off road a fair bit.

Recently, it came into it's own, doing our bit for the local community, during all the snow.

We ferried  Staff & Patients to and from Hospitals, in a couple of instances, they lived on a small holding, and the "Road" to their property was off road to say the least.

And with all the Snow, as you can imagine, we had to guess where the track was !!

The trees and bushes close to the track did help though.

And having been there before, we sort of knew the way....

Assisted by the passenger on occasion getting out & walking, to give us guidance.
