Another bunch of eco idiots at Cancun

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/environment/climatechange/8165769/Cancun-climate-change-summit-scie...
Quote
In one paper Professor Kevin Anderson, Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, said the only way to reduce global emissions enough, while allowing the poor nations to continue to grow, is to halt economic growth in the rich world over the next twenty years.
This would mean a drastic change in lifestyles for many people in countries like Britain as everyone will have to buy less ‘carbon intensive’ goods and services such as long haul flights and fuel hungry cars.
Prof Anderson admitted it “would not be easy” to persuade people to reduce their consumption of goods
He said politicians should consider a rationing system similar to the one introduced during the last “time of crisis” in the 1930s and 40s.
This could mean a limit on electricity so people are forced to turn the heating down, turn off the lights and replace old electrical goods like huge fridges with more efficient models. Food that has travelled from abroad may be limited and goods that require a lot of energy to manufacture.

Re: Another bunch of eco idiots at Cancun

And where is the growth in these poorer countries going to come from, if the richer countries don't buy their goods?

BEIJING (Reuters) - China acknowledged on Tuesday it is the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases stoking global warming, confirming what scientists have said for years but defending its right to keep growing emissions.
China's chief negotiator in international climate change talks, Xie Zhenhua, made the comment while spelling out his government's position ahead of negotiations in Cancun, Mexico, from November 29 over a new global pact to fight global warming.
Scientists and overseas bodies have said that since 2006-2007, China's greenhouse gas pollution has surpassed the United States', the world's top emitter for the 20th century.
But until now Beijing has hedged. Its officials have said it may possibly be the top emitter, that the issue needs more study or that average emissions per capita is a fairer measure to guide policy.
"Now we stand at world number one in emissions volumes," Xie told a news conference in Beijing.
Rich countries should nevertheless lead with steep cuts in their emissions, said Xie, since over time they have contributed most to the build-up of greenhouse gases trapping more solar heat in the atmosphere, and they should give poorer countries room to grow their economies and emissions.

Some people spend their whole life working whilst others spend it in some educational institution philosophizing about various subjects and realise the only way to get attention is to publish some radical document or say something outlandish.
Unfortunately these are the people the government listen to !

But, the overwhelming balance of scientific evidence is that we actually are affecting the global climate, and that if we carry on as we are it could have catastrophic consequences. If somebody alerts you to a genuine problem you need to do something about it, not ignore it.

Absolutely right.  They are in positions of influence and are able to peddle their rubbish almost unchallenged.  The arch proponent in this regard is Al Gore.  He's made a fortune out of peddling his nonsense and refuses to debate his views because he knows they will be exposed as such.
I wonder what the conference in Cancun cost in greenhouse gases Undecided Undecided

It isn't rubbish, though. Like I said, the evidence is there to back it up.

Re: Another bunch of eco idiots at Cancun

So you approve of rationing electricity and forcing people to turn the heating down so that the deaths from hypothermia increase and population reduces.
All the while China keeps emitting more and more CO2 and making the problem worse.
As a matter of interest the evidence for the catastrophic claims are computer models not observations and are based on fairly dramatic assumptions of positive feedback.
You do realise that the direct influence of CO2 is logarithmic - about 1 - 1.5 deg C rise per doubling of CO2 and all the alarming claims are based on amplification factors.

Depends whose evidence you choose to believe. Try reading:
The Great Global Warming Blunder by Roy W Spencer
The Real Global Warming Disaster by Christopher Booker
Or watch:
The C4 documentary The Great Global Warming Conspiracy
Quite a difference when the actual figures stretching over 11000 years are taken into account.
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: Another bunch of eco idiots at Cancun

Clearly a cunning plan by the Chinese.  Let the western world stop all production and drag themselves back into medieval times, while we (the Chinese) build our technology and wealth, thereby leading to world domination
Oh no! I've started another conspiracy theory!  Crazy

Re: Another bunch of eco idiots at Cancun

What is truly frightening to me is the fact that some people deny that burning fossil fuel at the rate we are doing and pumping all the resultant CO2 in to the atmosphere will change the climate. To anyone who has even a tiniest bit of common sense that has to be obvious. The discussion and research needs to be focused on just how big that affect will be. Ignoring the situation because the remedies are unpalatable cannot continue if the human race wants to exist in 500 years time.

Everybody will have to reduce their carbon footprint but that doesn't mean the consequences you suggest if it is done by more use of renewables and better heat conservation through improved insulation etc.
In 50 years time Al Gore will be regarded as a very great man who had the courage to speak out. I fear that by the time it is realised it will be too late.

Re: Another bunch of eco idiots at Cancun

Does that include reducing the World population by a couple of billion?
