The Russian plane that crashed on Saturday morning in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula was due to a "technical failure" and was not shot down, pilot Ayman Al-Mokadem, who is heading a committee to monitor the crash's aftermath, stated.
Al-Mokadem said that the pilot sensed a technical failure and reported to the aviation authorities that he wanted to land at the nearest airport.
An aviation team is on their way to extract the black boxes to determine the reason for the crash.
A death toll has yet to be announced.
The pilot seemed to crash while attempting to land in Al-Arish's airport in North Sinai, Al-Mokadem added.

Re: Another airliner down - Airbus

Someone has just posted a video on Youtube allegedly showing it being shot down. No idea if it's genuine, but big trouble if it is!

Re: Another airliner down - Airbus

From BBC
Quote
Mikail Robertson from the flight tracking service Flight Radar 24 has been giving more details about what could have happened after the flight left Sharm el-Sheik.
“It was climbing quite normally when after 23 minutes when it passed 30,000ft it suddenly started to lose speed,” he told BBC World.
“It went down from 400 knots to 62 knots and then it suddenly started to drop very fast… after about 20 seconds we lost the signal from this aircraft.”
He said it was hard to say what could have caused this to happen.
The very sudden drop of speed and altitude indicates that this was something more than a planned diversion – this was something happening very very fast.”

Re: Another airliner down - Airbus

Sadly some people are more inclined to accept the contents of a youtube video no matter how dodgy it looks, if it strengthens their own views against those whom it is claimed did it.

Re: Another airliner down - Airbus

Just to add to the confusion, ISIS in Egypt have claimed responsibility.

Re: Another airliner down - Airbus

Even if they are not responsible to claim they are is enough for some to believe they are responsible.

There will be the usual scaremongers spreading their conspiracy theories. The black boxes have been found quickly so a preliminary cause could be available very soon.
I wonder where the block boxes will be taken. Airbus will also have a representation in the investigations.

Why Ireland and America? Is there a rota of independent countries?

Re: Another airliner down - Airbus

The airliner was Irish owned and the engines were American.
