Another Com/Dem aid to lawbreakers

But did they switch off the Oxford speed cameras?

Speeding drivers revel in Oxford's great switch-off

When the county council turned off all its Gatso cameras, motorists quickly returned to law-breaking ways, reports Mark Hughes

Quote
What they did not know, however, is that the film was left inside two of the speed cameras for a five-day test period. During that time the cameras secretly recorded the speed of passing cars.
And, while the drivers will face no prosecution, the results of the experiment proved what road safety groups feared: with the Gatso cameras out of action, drivers simply ignored the speed limit.
On Woodstock Road, 110 drivers were caught travelling at more than 35mph along the 30mph road in the five-day test period. That's 18 per cent more than the number of drivers who used to be caught speeding in an average week.
It is a law-breaking trend which, owing to Government budget cuts, could soon be replicated across the country. And it is a situation which has provoked anger from road safety groups and senior police officers who say lives are being put at risk.

Re: Another Com/Dem aid tp lawbreakers

Hope they at least sent drivers a letter.
Much better to say that random cameras will be left on and frighten the speeders who won't know which.

Re: Another Com/Dem aid to lawbreakers

A number of places have stopped using their cameras.  Swindon was the first I think and Oxford followed with more in the pipeline.  Decisions were taken locally and not nationally but were started in Clown Brown's time at the helm. County Councils had their grants cut because of the National deficit and they decided how to apply the cuts in their budgets.

Er Hum
what about TweedleDee and Tweedle dum then

The decision to switch off the 72 fixed and 89 mobile speed cameras in Oxfordshire came after the county council had its central-government Road Safety Grant of £1m cut by £300,000. In turn, the council cut the budget of the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership – the group which maintains the speed camera network in Oxfordshire – by £600,000 and, in effect, forced the switching off of every speed camera in the county.

Re: Another Com/Dem aid to lawbreakers

There was never any funds allocated to these 'projects'.  They were simply hollow promises to buy votes.  Funny how they were promised in the last few months of a dying government Roll eyes

looks like the old tories have come out of hiding wearing liberal logo's on their coat
now councils are having to save money switching off traffic lights
so that government can ensure taxpayers money can trickle up to the  top

I think you heard the facts from one of your own the ex Chief Secretary who left a note to his successor saying' There is no money'.  At least there was one honest individual in the last government.

Re: Another Com/Dem aid to lawbreakers

The country is pretty much broke, Labours spending policy of spending money they don't have in the hope no one notices has left the country on it's knees.  We owe a lot of money, it has to be repaid, we cannot afford (no country can) the policies of an incompetent chancellor (Brown) who's idea to fixing a problem was to throw as much cash at it as possible.
It's debatable if we need Trident or not, but I for one would rather have it and never use it, than not have it and require it, that is why it is called a deterrent.  Iran, North Korea, both are aiming at becoming nuclear powers and are not exactly friendly to us.  Having the capability to totally destroy an aggressor is the idea behind MAD.
The coalition government is needed right now, there are tough spending cuts needed and for the economy to be put back on track we need a government who isn't held back by being a minority government.  Next election after the changes to the seats, the Conservatives may win a major land-slide, they may lose to Labour or there may be another hung parliament, not likely as disenchanted Lib Dem's may vote Labour, so let's hurry along to the next election and another Labour government to introduce us to the nanny state, big brother is watching you 24/7, let's erode your civil liberties including demonstrations near Parliament, having your camera taken by coppers, illegally invading Iraq, councils using Anti-Terror laws to examine the contents of your bin etc.. etc.. etc.. all hail the oh so perfect Labour government who ignored 1million people marching on London and did what they wanted to.
Personally, I'd have preferred the Conservatives to have won out-right, by a large margin, they could have then made sweeping cuts without the Lib Dem's holding them back.
