Anne Kirkbride has died

Better known as Deirdre Barlow on Coronation Street
Announced to the public at 9:05pm last night.
http://www.itv.com/coronationstreet/news/anne-kirkbride
A personal tragedy, I knew Anne well from my time working with her on Coronation Street at Granada TV over many years
It's taken me a few hours to come to terms with the announcement of her death.
She was a really nice person, we had many chats, both on and off set.
She will be sadly missed by fellow Actors and Crew..
So many tributes to her.
R.I.P. Anne

Re: Anne Kirkbride has died

Very sad news, she was a goog actress.
I have not watched coronation street for years, possibly from the time it started to get like East  Enders.
I will probably get slated for saying this but I understand Anne-kirkbride smoked a lot, my own brother in law died from throat cancer age 60 and he smoked a lot, I feel sure that smoking whilst not the actual cause may have been a major contributor to her death at 60.

Re: Anne Kirkbride has died

A sad loss and she did have some meaty story lines.
Apparently she was a chain smoker but I haven't seen it mentioned in connection with her death.

Re: Anne Kirkbride has died

As you say she had some memorable story lines.
But sadly her heavy smoking did prematurely age her.

Re: Anne Kirkbride has died

Not sure that proves anything...
My dad smoked 40 non-tipped (Players/Senior Service) a day for 76 years and died aged 90 - not from cancer.

Re: Anne Kirkbride has died

@PlusComUK - my commiserations
Never really watched Corrie, but surprised to read that she was same age as me, thought she was about 10 years older. She must have started as Deirdre when I was doing my O-Levels  Shocked
I'm also in the "cigarettes as a probable contributing factor" camp. My dad died from cancer at 63. He was a heavy smoker (Players/Senior Service again). Just hoping I haven't "passive-smoked" enough to affect me; if I get to 64 I will be the first in my direct male line to reach that age for at least 200 years. It's going to be a worrying 4 years  Undecided

Re: Anne Kirkbride has died

We will never here the sound of  'OHHHHHH Ken' anymore, but i did think that they were turning her into a bit of a caricature in recent years like a few other characters on there such as Gail,Sally, Kirk & Beth, she became a bit lost once Blanche died & ended up just playing 2nd fiddle to Tracy & Peter's antics just as boring Ken does.
I think the writers need to get back to basics & stop relying on regurgitated dramatic events like crashes & murders to get the ratings, it needs more interesting story lines (nothing far fetched) & better repertoire between characters like in the old days of the 60s / 70s, another mystery is why are all the walk on coppers so wooden?
