Re: And some of us think we got problems

Whatever happened to the idea of putting up "Do not dig here, call xyz number before commencing work" signs along telecommunications routes? Oh, it costs too much to make the signs? Oh, okay, so how much does it cost to repair the fibreoptics versus putting up the signs?? Crazy2

Re: And some of us think we got problems

Back in the old days, i.e. before 2000; I was specifying fibre optic links for International trading floors. We had an archaic practice of demanding that the telecomms suppliers installed diversely routed bearer fibres to our buildings. This meant that when Mr Murphy was careless with his back-hoe excavator in a road somewhere we'd have the ability to continue in business.

One has to question why  the bearer cables to telephone exchanges are not all diversely routed?  It is just a matter of strategic resilience.

Strangely enough one of our most difficult offices was in South Africa. There was only a limited number of submarine cables and almost no terrestrial telecomms cables. The underwater links used to get chewed by sharks, attracted by the cable's electromagnetic field. The overground cables suffered by local tribes stealing the copper. The UK doesn't have those problems, well not to the same extent.

Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

The u.k. does have problems with sharks, and local tribesmen stealing the cables for the copper ! ! ..

But hopefully, the new laws and regulations brought in to "tidy up" the scrap yard business will lessen their effect..

In the UK, the sharks sell you the telephone services at vastly inflated prices. More profitable and legal than ripping copper lines up.
