Amazon Goes into Phones

It's been rumoured for a while but now it's confirmed that Amazon is to bring out a phone - the Amazon Fire Phone.
First question is why? It's a saturated market and they will be competing with the likes of Samsung and Apple. It will be interesting to see how the launch goes.

Re: Amazon Goes into Phones

if the device works better than its tablets did then they could be onto a winner, there real problem will be network carrier fee's, the handset is cheap enough though so as long as the monthly contract isn't to high it could be a real money spinner if not in the first gen certainly in the second or third gen, but a lot will depend on the mobile phone carrier company, if they tie it to Vodafone O2 or EE then chances are it will suffer poor sales, however if they make it available on all companies at the same time it could do very well, especially as a lot of people have become annoyed with Apple products in the last few years (the constant new handsets every few months that aren't as good as the last version etc)
then again people might be a tad concerned over the camera's and remote operation....a feature that will be built into the phone as part of the support package in the root directory.....

Re: Amazon Goes into Phones

In the US the phone is only available through AT & T.

Re: Amazon Goes into Phones

yeas but I was referring to the inevitable UK/EU release
in the US anyone who wants there handset to do well releases it on AT&T who have the cheapest data tariffs, then if it does well they often open up to other carriers after 6>12 months, sprint/Verizon have far less generous plan allowances not to mention that they also have less nationwide coverage

Re: Amazon Goes into Phones

Just read an article in the Grauniad suggesting that although 1.76bn phones are owned that only two manufacturers make a profit; Apple and Samsung
It also says that this device is designed for shopping and one ‘Talking Head’ suggesting that ‘would be less about profiting from device sales per se and more a way to pocket a larger share of multiple revenue streams such as mobile retail sales, mobile content and advertising’

Re: Amazon Goes into Phones

I wonder if there will be two versions.
The cheap one subsidised by ads.
And the more expensive ad free version.
After all Amazon do have a track record of this.
