Am I Being Paranoid

Received an email from TSB (genuine) this afternoon advising me of their new phone app.

It wasn't an update to the app I currently had on my phone but a completely new one.

I checked on Play Store and there it was but I read on.

It now included a facility to log in simply with a fingerprint scan bypassing the password and memorable information check.

I thought it sounded ok at first then I thought.

Current app installed

I'm down a dark street at night when two likely lads grab me, push me to the ground, take out my phone, open the banking app and ask me for my login details.

I refuse, they beat me up and run off with my phone.

Now I have the new app installed and working.

I'm down a dark street at night when two likely lads grab me, push me to the ground, take out my phone and open the banking app.

They then put my finger on the scanner which logs them in.

They jump in a car and disappear with access to my bank account.

I haven't installed the app.

Re: Am I Being Paranoid

I think I'll stick to keyed in access details.

After all, I could write my pin on my debit card because if nobody else gets hold of it what could go wrong.

In any case I can change my password, I can't change my fingerprint.

Re: Am I Being Paranoid

I've been using the  new app for some time and although includes the option to use fingerprint login, you don't have to enable/use it, you can continue to use your password/memorable information to login, and its a better app (it shows you pending transactions for example).

Also from a security POV, if it's a choice between using an old app that presumably now isn't have much if any development time invested in it and the new/current app that is, continuing with the former probably isn't the wisest move...

I use fingerprint scanning... I don't envisage an issue - after all, they don't know which finger you have usedWink

Re: Am I Being Paranoid

I am surprised they don't allow, say, any combination of three fingers or thumbs (one at a time). For most people that would be odds of (if my maths is correct) a 1 in 120 chance of setting it right, The odds would be longer if you had to get them in order,

Re: Am I Being Paranoid

I suppose it would be just plain awkward having to take your sock off to login?

I'd like the option of a 'kill switch' too, i.e if you attempt a login with a particular digit it nukes your personal data

Re: Am I Being Paranoid

If my phone is stolen I can remotely trigger an alarm.

I can also trigger wiping of all data.

Unfortunately I don't have the option to detonate the phone.
