United Airlines have withdrawn from service 24 BOEING 777-200  from active service VOLUNTARILY.

Japan`s Aviation Regulator has ordered the same action.

BREAKING: Japan’s aviation regulator has ordered Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways to cease flying 777s with Pratt & Whitney PW4000s, the same type involved in #UAL328 on Saturday, according to an advisory on its website and confirmed by an industry source.

Not sure on the timeline but I read on the BBC news app that Boeing had recommended that they be taken out of service.

Reported on the news as 'sparks coming out of the engine'

Video of the engine showed it in flames! 

Meanwhile no doubt over the intercom, "no need to worry, we have it all under control, it's just a slight overheating issue".

All landed safe which was a huge relief of course.

From what I can see.....

Engine failure... Feb 20  ( after take off at 2020 UTC

Japan Airline Regulator issued their order 21st Feb

FAA issued a "directive" to " require immediate or stepped-up inspections of Boeing 777 airplanes equipped with PW4000 engines

United Airlines then issued their notice saying they were Voluntarily and temporarily removing 24 Boeing 777 with PW4000 engines from their service schedule

Then... Boeing issued their statement, saying they were "actively monitoring recent events....... " 

and also...

"Boeing supports the decision yesterday[ by the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau to suspend 777 operations ...."

I wonder if they would have all suspended flights so quickly , if it wasn't for the fact that all the airlines have probably got loads of spare aircraft around!!

It's been very quiet about this one in Holland though, presumably as it was a freighter so not much Excitement" to be had with the passenger figures. Rolls Royce must be wiping the sweat off their foreheads now that it is another engine manufacturer in the headlines, for the wrong reasons..

I wonder whether those flown by UK airlines have Rolls-Royce engines.

There was another one just after takeoff from LHR in 2013.  That was an airbus A319.  Could both incidents have the same root cause?  In which case you only need to change the 'forgetful' maintenance crew.

Yeah... according to your linky write up.... the were both powered by PW 4000 series engines... although slightly different numbers, indicating possible slight differences in the power output due to minor mechanical changes...

It seems to go back to nationalism. P&W engines mainly in use in America and the East, instead of RR. P&W 4000 configured planes are currently banned from UK airspace.

Which is quite a serious blow to those who operate from the US, into Europe and Scandinavia... as their planes have to pass through UK air space, en-route... Now, of course, they will have to "go round the outside" which adds to the cost and flight time. (If, they are still going to use those planes, so fitted.)
