Abuse Sites Blocked

Microsoft and Google have joined forces to block sites on child abuse.  The 2 companies' search engines cover 95% of all internet searches.  Obliviously there will be some people who will be able to get around these restrictions but it seems a step in the right direction.

Re: Abuse Sites Blocked

There was talk of the 'dark internet' (whatever that might be) where most of that stuff is obtained as most people won't use Google to look for it.

Re: Abuse Sites Blocked

Was there also some suggestion that ISP's would be required to block these sites ?

Re: Abuse Sites Blocked

There was some talk about a month ago about the government pushing ISPs to force people to opt into porn.  Plans clearly drawn up by someone with little clue about the interweb.
As Strat says, this latest PR announcement by Google and Microsoft is unlikely to make much practical difference as ths stuff is already illegal and is therefore largely hidden from web crawlers anyway.

Yes there was mention of 'the dark internet'.  Like you I'm not sure what it means in any detail.  This move will not solve the problem but if it helps then it is useful.

Re: Abuse Sites Blocked

The more they drive it "underground", the harder it will be to track the real offenders.

I assume that just means that sites are on VPNs (password protected, encrypted Virtual Private Networks - like most companies use for home working) that web crawlers (e.g. Google, Bing, Yahoo etc) can't access.
Re not being able to track because it's underground: I think that boat already sailed.

Eli "the computer guy" seems to know a lot about everything (computer related), and is good at explaining technical details in easy to understand language.  I often listen to his tutorials as background audio while I web browse in another window.

Thats one reason I won't use Tor despite it's appealingness for p2p. You've no idea what other people might be downloading via your own internet connection when using Tor and it could be anything from music to child porn.
I think google in reality have done a good thing however as with most things, determined people won't be stopped so easily (and if google were actually helping people find child porn then they should be ashamed of themselves).
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
