Absolute zero

Is the temperature for absolute zero the lowest temperature that can ever be reached or is it possible to get the temperature lower than that ?
Have a think about it then have a look at this,

So we'll soon have hovercars then eh?

Re: Absolute zero

Yes, but we'll get fried by the radio waves needed to drive them. Need our thermals too. Grin

Re: Absolute zero

The Wired article seems to miss out all the interesting bits and get it a bit wrong! New Scientist has much better coverage.

The resulting thermometer is mind-bending with a scale that starts at zero, ramps up to plus infinity, then jumps to minus infinity before increasing through the negative numbers until it reaches negative absolute zero, which corresponds to all particles sitting at the top of the energy hill.

“The inverted Boltzmann distribution is the hallmark of negative absolute temperature, and this is what we have achieved,” said study co-author Ulrich Schneider at the University of Munich in a press release. “Yet the gas is not colder than zero kelvin, but hotter.”

So, the Universe understands an integer overflow too...

Re: Absolute zero

The question then is not one of temperature but whether the universe is 32 or 64 bit?  Crazy

Re: Absolute zero

The architecture is probably 64 bit but the operating system is an old version of win-whatsit that is only 32 bit. The occasional rumbles heard and flashes seen are when overflow occurs. Crazy

If someone can be said to give 110% so surely  there can be a temperature lower than zero Tongue

Re: Absolute zero

If they discover an energy state which absorbs heat at zero K without an increase temperature and consequent emissions, I'd call that  below absolute zero.  I'd dread to imagine a below zero chain reaction though.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.
