HISTORY DOCUMENTARY: The British Transport Films: A Nation on Film Special
On: BBC 2 East (2)
Date: Wednesday 24th December 2008
Time: 10:20 to 11:00 (40 minutes long)
A look at the work of the British Transport Film unit, a group of film-makers paid by the government to persuade people to use public transport after the Second World War. Some of their critics called their work expensive propaganda, but the unit produced some of our finest post-war documentaries and captured a golden era on the railways, before the Beeching cuts.

Re: A1 Pacific Steam Locomotive on BBC2

I used to love the steam trains and living in Crewe which was one of the main  railworks there was plenty to see. My grandfather worked as a boilermaker and often took me around the works to see the trains. He worked on a lot of famous trains there was one which I cant remember the name of but basically the driver committed suicide  by screwing down the steam valve so the train blew up.
My grandad also made model trains the sort you sit on and take kids for rides and a lot were exported to the USA. Crewe now is a ghost town to what it was when everyone worked in Crewe Works

Same could be said of Swindon, Doncaster, Derby Etc. other railway towns.
Swindon has had Honda ( except close down for two months ) .
How is Rolls Royce doing at Crewe ?Huh
I know of a couple of ex Crewe fitters who now fit out and repair boats at Nantwich

they're not doing anything at Crewe -- they shut up shop there in 2002!
