9 Million Bicycles Going Underground

Well maybe not 9 Million but could cyclists use disused tube tunnels to cross London?
Quote
A subterranean cycle and walking network using London's abandoned Tube tunnels is being proposed.
The London Underline would be lined with kinetic paving, which uses friction from cycle tyres and shoes to generate electricity to power the project.

Quote
The route could run under central London from Holborn in the east to Green Park in the west with docking stations for the capital's 'Boris Bike' scheme dotted along the tunnels.

Seems like a good use of some old tunnels.

I'm not so sure.
Most pedestrian underpasses seem to be popular with muggers and ne'er do wells. Not pedestrians.
What's to stop the old tunnels ending up the same?

Re: 9 Million Bicycles Going Underground

The Monsal cycle trail has several quite long tunnels
main danger here is being run down by a hoard of cyclists

Well it isn't! Tunnels and railway lines are meant for trains... you know.. those big long tall things that slide along a set of rails that have fascinated men for hundreds of years. Yes.. THOSE things... the same things that ministers hate and have tried to destroy for years... (excluding maggie who actually supported BR oddly despite disliking trains).
No I think this is a terrible idea myself. I'm no fan of the underground but i'd prefer to see them reopened and at a time when our population is facing a public transport crisis, I fail to see just why we can't reopen them.
It's absurd.

Re: 9 Million Bicycles Going Underground

Yeah in fairness you have a point there.. it would keep them out of the way os uf motorists lol
But then consider this.. considering they pay no road tax, no insurance and take no test (which also provides income to the government) then why should we spend £millions on them? We could instead spend those £millions on real public transport that helps disabled people aswell as fit people who can ride a bike.

Re: 9 Million Bicycles Going Underground

In London there are millions spent on cycle schemes so it would simply mean using it in other ways.

Maybe they will also fix the ticket machines at the proposed cycle tunnel entrances.

"But then consider this.. considering they pay no road tax"
Just to be correct, no one pays road tax it was abolished in 1937.

Re: 9 Million Bicycles Going Underground

Before attacking bicycles, just remember, if it wasn't for bicycles, the car would not have become a reality, the bike gave birth to the car when people added a couple more wheels and an engine, so, pay some respect to the descendants of the great grandfather of the car... Cool

Re: 9 Million Bicycles Going Underground

On the 'they pay no road tax' front,  you have to wonder if the same logic is used for drivers of vehicles in VED Band A who also pay nothing,  and they're exempt from the congestion charge too..

Re: 9 Million Bicycles Going Underground

Sounds a good idea but i think there would have to be some sort of limit otherwise you may get stuck in traffic Tongue
