Re: 75 years ago

The Dambusters is probably one of the best WWII films depicting the bravery and dedication of all those involved.

I live quite close to Reculver where most of the testing was done.

Re: 75 years ago

Bit of a stretch I know, but one of my son-in-laws Grandfather was a flight sergeant on that raid. Fortunately, and unlike many others, he lived to tell the tale and one of only fifty that survived the war. The family still have his medals and diaries.

A timely reminder of a debt we can never repay. Sad

Re: 75 years ago

Hard to imagine what they must have felt before going on a mission knowing they might never return.

People talk about, 'stress' these days imagine the stress they must have been under, not forgetting their families and relatives who were also under stress but supported those in a similar situation.

Despite the many complaints we all have these days imagine what it would have been like had they not been wiling to risk their lives for our future, we owe them much.

Re: 75 years ago

What a load of jingoistic nonsense.

Over 1600 people killed, many of them on ‘our’ side. And for what?

Operation Chastise did not have the military effect that was at the time believed. By 27 June, full water output was restored, thanks to an emergency pumping scheme inaugurated the previous year, and the electricity grid was again producing power at full capacity. The raid proved to be costly in lives (more than half the lives lost belonging to Allied POWs and forced-labourers), but was no more than a minor inconvenience to the Ruhr's industrial output. The value of the bombing can perhaps at best be seen as a boost to British morale.

I'm sure there's many a quote that could be said regarding war time losses and victories, but two that come to my mind are:

"War does not determine who is right - Only who is left."

and;

"The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few."

Re: 75 years ago

Indeed, but is this more about those that gave their lives for their country, after all Europe was overrun and we were definitely top of the list to be next.

It never ceases to amaze me at just how young these guys were and how many knew what their chances were of not coming back, and those here that measure success just by the damage this raid dealt to the German war effort are using the wrong yard stick and unsurprisingly, need to take a long hard look at themselves.

Re: 75 years ago

The last surviving British member of the Dambusters raid has flown over the Derwent Valley in a Lancaster bomber.

Squadron Leader George "Johnny" Johnson, 96, was meant to fly over on Wednesday to mark the mission's 75th anniversary. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Re: 75 years ago

I take it he was not a squadron leader when he occupied the same position in 1943.

Amazing video, thanks. Thumbs Up

Re: 75 years ago

I digitised the operational sorties for 106 Sqn recently. It was Gibson's Sqn before he left to form 617 Sqn and took some of the best crews with him.

Some of the records were heartbreaking to read. Night after night, after night, after night they took off - then on the 28 or 29 sortie (they did a max of 30 in general before they were rested) the remarks column in the Operational Records Book said 'Failed to Return'.

It certainly gave pause for thought.
