The government has finally stepped in and issue an unprecedented recall notice for all 500,000 of the dangerous tumble dryers still in existence.

Is my machine affected?
If you own a Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Proline or Swan Tumble dryer and it was manufactured between 2004 and 2015 it is likely to be affected.
You should log on the website for the brand and use their model number search for confirmation.
Further information in the linky...

Yes.... and as it happens.... we got a Hoover tumble drier, that is about 8 years old... it makes a screeching sound near the end of it`s drying cycle... so have ordered a replacement from CURRYs arriving Tuesday.

One possible cause if it's design is anything like the old Hotpoint driers I've thrown away in the past is it could be the front drum 'bearings'.
Well they weren't actually bearings but four thin rectangular PTFE-type pads placed between the front rim of the drum and a circular pressing in the sheet steel at the front of the drier.
When the pads wore away it enabled metal on metal contact which made the noise you appear to be describing.
It used to be a PITA to change them

I still don't get it why in this age of global warming we (not me, ever) have these things. Waste of money, waste of space, waste of energy, waste of time... and a wasting away of our kids future and now, they catch light.
So, when was the last time you heard of a clothes line catching fire or adding to your monthly energy bills, and for those with a religious bent, it's your Gods way of telling you to smell the coffee save the planet!

They are intended for the dwellers who inhabit those multi-storey rabbit hutches.

Indeed, but back in my day, no back garden... no problem.

@Minivanman Id like to see that between two multi storey tower blocks. Would the lines have to have fairy lights on them to warn low flying aircraft

How do you check when the clothes are dry?

Back in the day you'd pull the line back to check but now you'll know they're dry when they go missing from the line as some little Oik will have nicked them!

@Minivanman Binoculars are no use, that would only tell you they 'looked' dry.

As in "it looks like rain" you mean.
I dunno, we (or rather NASA) can detect damp around a quasar 12 billion light-years away and yet...

No, as in the fabric looks dry but doesn't mean it is. So unless you have NASA’s toys then the only other option would be to touch it.
