25 years of mobile phones

Had an email circular from an electronics journal come in, with some interesting statistics.
Quote
The anniversary of the first call was celebrated last week at Cellular 25, held at the Science Museum in London.
The presentations, including some by mobile industry pioneers, threw up some interesting statistics. For instance, 94% of the traffic on the UK's mobile phone network is now data or internet access - just 6% is voice calls. Last year, everyone sent, on average, 1213 text messages. More than 5billion texts will be sent and received today. And a typical 21 year old will have spent 10,000 hours talking on their mobile.

Last year I think I sent two text messages Cheesy. If that average is correct, some people must be sending colossal numbers.

Re: 25 years of mobile phones

I won't be far ahead of you - probably no more than a dozen in a year.
The PFY has a personal mobile phone bill of over £80 for Jan .
His work mobile bill tends to be in the region of £25/mth
One has to wonder what is so interesting.
Maybe they were right about that 'all work and no play...' thing?

Looks like I'm spot on average.  Just looked at last month's bill and I sent 101 texts.

Re: 25 years of mobile phones

I very rarely use my mobile. I top up about £10 every 4~ months. I keep my phone on me incase someone calls, but I don't usually call with my mobile or even text.

Re: 25 years of mobile phones

I probably send about 150 txts a month these days.
When i started using a GSM phone about 1995 - my average monthly cellphone bill was about £300 - luckily it was a company phone, and a fair number of calls were international between Finland and UK
Personally I first used mobile phone was in about 1984 that was a Mobira System 4 phone marketed by Marconi  on BT's System 4 network.
I had my first company car with TACS Analogue carphone in 1991  when it was fairly uncommon.

Re: 25 years of mobile phones

I use 30 free texts from Orange site + 10 from 02 site each month. I sent about 100 texts using 18185 and quite a few from my Virgin mobile. I prefer online texting as one can type them.
My daughter can easily send 2000 texts a month but has no land line - most of my texts are to her.
Think I've still got my analogue brick somewhere.
