20th March 2015... a date for your Diary.

A solar eclipse is set to block out nearly 90 per cent of sunlight across parts of Europe next month - and it will be the biggest event of its kind in 16 years.
On 20 March, the moon's orbit will see it travel in front of the sun, casting a shadow over Earth.
The eclipse will see up to 84 per cent of the sun covered in London - and around 94 per cent in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh.
The eclipse will be the biggest event of its kind since 11 August 1999

Re: 20th March 2015... a date for your Diary.

From that Daily Mail Report
"Meanwhile, electricity system operators have warned the eclipse poses a serious risk of blackouts all over Europe as the continent increasingly relies on solar power."
If they manage to cope at night I am sure that they will cope with this predictable event for 90mins during the day.

Re: 20th March 2015... a date for your Diary.

It reminds me of an old Swansea joke about the nearby Steel Town called Port Talbot.  An English  primary school teacher, not long working at the school eagerly announces to the class that in one hour's time there'll be a total eclipse and the moon will blot out the sun giving us darkness, Young Dylan at the back of the class pipes up: "Please Miss, what is the sun?"

Note: Port Talbot used to get a lot of smoke from the blast furnaces.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

UK solar eclipse:
Greater Manchester to be plunged into darkness in biggest blackout since 1999
The region will go dark when the sun and the moon perfectly align between 8am and 10am on Friday, March 20.

During the Solar Eclipse of 1999, I was at the BBC  that day, and nearly everyone there made their way to the roof to view the Eclipse.
With suitable precautions.....

Re: 20th March 2015... a date for your Diary.

I was in northern France in 1999 with a perfect view of the total eclipse. I don't recall it going completely dark until totality - in fact in a sort of twilight you could see the shadowline approaching rapidly across the valley in the final seconds. So I think predictions of England "plunged into darkness" may well be exaggerated.
Here is one of my pictures from 1999 - we are way past 90% and it's still bright

What a load of rubbish! There will be people who won't even realise there's been an eclipse.

True enough.
