150 years since the first London Underground journey.

London Underground's 150th anniversary
Quote
On 9 January 2013, London Underground celebrates 150 years since the first underground journey took place between Paddington and Farringdon on the Metropolitan Railway.

Some good photos here.
I have always found London's Underground system to be fascinating but don't venture down there very often due to claustrophobia.
Got stuck in a train once back in the eighties on the Northern line for a couple of days. Well, about 40 minutes but seemed so much longer Shocked
One thing though, compared to the stations in Kyiv the ones here do seem a tad drab but steeped with history, though.
Edit: Even Google has got in on the celebrations Cheesy

Some great pics.
Interestingly, although it is referred to as the Underground, only 45% of it is below ground.

Despite the underground releiving surface traffic, it is a known fact, that the speed of traffica above ground is still no more than when the horse and cab ruled the road !

Imagine what the speed would be without the underground Sad

Bring back the Thames Wherry. Put the commuters back on to the river.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Re: 150 years since the first London Underground journey.

The steam run last night was, quite simply, fantastic and well worth the £360 it cost for us both to go.
Quoting myself from other sites,
It was a fantastic experience, and I loved every minute of it. Just seeing the steam train coming in to Moorgate was enough for me, but the fantastically good ride and the fellow passengers in the carriage made the event so much more fun.
The looks on the faces of people on platforms and trains was fantastic, although some were oblivious and doing double takes. Tfl staff, the BTP and what looked like a fireman were all taking videos and pics and everyone just seemed to be saving a good time.
Despite doubting the price, I feel it was worth the money.

Which stations did the train go through?

Moorgate through Barbican, Faringdon, Kings Cross, Euston Square, Great Portland Street, Baker Street to Edgware Road hauled by Sarah Siddons (Electric). We then ran back the other way steam-hauled.
