100Mbit Ethernet access for £800/month?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/15/exponential_e_ethernet/
A little scant on details, but makes interesting reading.

Re: 100Mbit Ethernet access for £800/month?

with the industry standard 1000:1 contention?
On a related note though, I know exactly what he means with leased line costs, I run a big fat pipe into Dundee, and it costs a fortune to operate...
Now if I could switch to 100Meg pipes instead... I'll definately be following this one... all the way to 2012, when my exchanges change to 21CN... damn..

That's mental
BT are offering 100mbps lines for £44 a month to providers,
see here.

I know however surely if the wholesale cost is good they will want to roll out elsewhere?

I wouldn't expect to see anything from it in the short term though.
Also it's not the wholesale cost, that BT need to worry about it's the actual cost of putting in the fibre to begin with, even just to the street cabinet will cost a *lot* of money.
If it works well in ebbsfleet though and BT feel there is a market for it / they can make money from it elsewhere then no doubt it will be rolled out to other places. It will take a long time to roll out though...

BT wanted to do the sensible thing over 2 decads ago, shame they got bloked by the government on the grounds the cable providers would be in a better position to do this.
What did get get, well, two cable companies with red figures and, look, not that much fibre.

Re: 100Mbit Ethernet access for £800/month?

When BT lay or re-lay underground copper cables, why don't they stick a length of unconnected fibre in?
It can't cost much extra, given that they have to install a cable in anyway.
