09 phone numbers

Customers phoning banks, high street shops or energy providers are being tricked into paying £3.60 a minute.

when you search online for a phone number some sites are showing numbers that start 09 A premium rate call and not the correct number Angry

Re: 09 phone numbers

The linked 'story' is very light on detail - i.e. none at all.

I use a number of the named organisations and have never seen an '09' number given as a first point of contact - in fact most have been '0800' type prefixes.

Wonder why they published?

Yep, red-top rags (and the DM) generally don't publish something unless they can make things up first... Funny

Re: 09 phone numbers

Its not only 09 numbers that can be expensive to call 0842 0842 0843 0843 0844 and the old 0870 numbers can be very expensive to call some people think they are free like an 0800 or included in the call package.

I use   https://www.saynoto0870.com    to find an alternative inclusive number

Re: 09 phone numbers

@rongtw I still find it difficult to believe people can use a computer to find Google (or other search sites), but not that of the organisation they wish to contact - or are they just too lazy?

Like @8BKA, if the number on that site is a non-geographic or possibly one which will cost me, I use the site he links.

Re: 09 phone numbers

So then, it's not the companies that are fleecing the customers. I've no desire to be hurtful to those 'conned' in to using the premium number, but their unawareness is the result of nothing other than themselves.

0870 my plan includes them, but then only and not such as 0871.

No one has to agree with my opinion, but in the time I have left a miracle would be nice.

Re: 09 phone numbers

It's easy to be duped with 07 numbers too. Anything starting with 070 for instance is going to cost you.

They're known as "follow me" numbers - because they can be redirected. Ofcom have set out rules that you cannot profit from them however that has not stopped unscrupulous telecoms providers from offering a slice of the cake - a quick google will find several.

I did contact Ofcom about this when i got had by a scrap yard but they didn't want to know - in other words they've licenced the wild west.

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: 09 phone numbers

The article highlights the "call connection service" scam. This is where scammers set up and advertise premium rate 084, 087 or 09 numbers that simply forward calls onwards to the organisation that you wanted to contact. The scammer makes off with the Service Charge element of the call charge (less VAT, of course).

The Mirror article is very light on detail. This is a scam that affects thousands of people every day - the problem is that even though they have been scammed, most people would blame the company they called for the high charges they incurred because in most cases they remain completely unaware that a third party set up the scam and benefitted from it.

You would rightly be wary of someone setting up a temporary entrance sign and charging £10 to get into your local supermarket via a side entrance to the building. This phone scam is somewhat akin to that.
