Well i dont know if FREE has anything to do with it asbo but if your like me and play hardcore games on hard difficulty then its a real treat to play simple games sometimes to give you that break from the more serious game if that makes sense, One of the reasons i like the Wii and the superb new mario bros and super mario galaxy, Its just great to play a simple fun easy game sometimes, Cant wait for super mario galaxy 2 in june,will be fun fun fun!! 
'free' games tend to have to work harder to capture their audience.. also they are normally driven by ads, so better game = better ad revenue. The developers actually give a crap what the game turns out like, then you get developers like EA who pump out crap rebadged title after crap rebadged title.. and make a mint just because of the branding...
