Some ISP's blocking gaming?

Linky
Good lord.  Why?
Especially as COD4 is a cracking game.

Re: Some ISP's blocking gaming?

It would appear that as COD4 uses P2P certain ISPs just have a blanket ban on it.
Tiscali seem to be the worst culprits though people are reporting it on BT too.  Have a look at http://www.infinityward.com/community/forum/index.php?topic=9245.330

Re: Some ISP's blocking gaming?

How long before Plusnet users on Tiscali LLU have problems?

Re: Some ISP's blocking gaming?

Shouldn't happen, as the network filtering is occurring at the ISP network level.
Tiscali just provide backhaul for Plusnet, so they wouldn't have the opportunity to filter.

Re: Some ISP's blocking gaming?

Why would Tiscali be imposing these restrictions? One reason could be that because of the way they are moving all the users they have acquired on to their own network where possible their backhaul capacity is getting stretched.

Re: Some ISP's blocking gaming?

It is Tiscali retail that is doing the blocking of P2P. PlusNet get their LLU connection from Tiscali Wholesale (a different part of Tiscali), like they get ADSL IP Stream from BT Wholesale (A different part of BT).

Re: Some ISP's blocking gaming?

Appreciate that Peter, but like when BT exchanges go red, whether Plusnet do any rate limiting is irrelevant to the speeds people see on http etc., so if Tiscali are moving thousands of users on to their own network there could start to be problems on their backhaul. The fact that Tiscali retail are blocking P2P means that there is a capacity problem somewhere!

Re: Some ISP's blocking gaming?

Bear in mind that we have our own dedicated backhaul for Tiscali LLU, which none of the Tiscali Retail customers will be touching.
Exchange contention may be a different question though.

Re: Some ISP's blocking gaming?

Hopefully it won't be a problem for the Plusnet Tiscali LLU users. How closely this needs monitoring I suppose depends upon how much you trust Tiscali...

Hi all first post.... Smiley
As somebody who escaped Tiscali a few weeks ago....I really hope we dont get the same issues here.
Many of my friends have migrated here due to problems with online gaming through tiscali.

Re: Some ISP's blocking gaming?

The moment we block gaming traffic is the moment we stop being an ISP!
I'm absolutely certain that will never ever happen.
Glad you managed to escape from their evil cluthes Smiley  Similar things going on at Pipex currently which is rather sad to see.

If you go into the Tiscali forums they are admitting to a "bandwidth management" issue which has been ongoing for some time. Very little information though. I read it as either:
1. Cost/capacity/profit
2. Management software has a MAJOR bug - they use something from Cisco I believe.
Whatever it is there are an awful lot of angry people there.
