Anyone play quake live/quake3 arena?
the game is hated by many due to the fact the skill levels of your every day player is so high that new players get frustrated and end up hating the game. I know many quake players who have played for a few years walk into other fps games and find them easy compared to quake.
You can go into quake and find players who are extremely talented, read the game brilliantly and you would be forgiven to think they were at the top of the game or close at-least but you would be wrong. There will be many many better players playing everyday but even they dont come remotely close to the levels the pro gamers like cooller, rapha etc. Quake has an extremely high skill ceiling that to this day has never been reached. No player in the games history has mastered this game. Every pro passed and present has had faults in his game and could improve.
This is why imo quake is the daddy of all fps games

I cut my gaming teeth on Quake and Doom many years ago. I should have quit while I was ahead.

I cut my FPS teeth (which aren't the sharpest in the world but I have a lot of fun) on Doom and the first 3 quake games back in the day and where as current games like Farcry3 and Battlefield 3 are great I agree the don't make 'em like they used to!

Respect
My first online game was q3a instagib with the grappling hook and the map you could go under it.
I used to suck badly but the people I met were really friendly and showed me so much. I then turned to ut2003 and then ut2004.
So many things I miss from the old days like IRC and just the fast pace skilled matches we used to play. Damn people used to be fast back then. I wouldn't hate new games so much If I didn't know any better. Ignorance is bliss.

I remember selling Doom to customers back in the mid 90's.
I also had both my PC and my lodgers hooked up with a serial cable made out of surplus space shuttle wiring cable so we could play head to head.
