PS3 v Blue Ray

I want to get a blue ray player but I'm not sure where to begin.
Friends tell me I should buy the PS3 as it plays blue ray but I've already got a Wii & DS and I can't justify buying another games console.
Ok, so the main reason I want a blue ray is to watch films on my HD ready Plasma that has never had anything decent pumped into it for years (that's what my wife says on a daily basis 🙂 )
Apart from watching blue ray I believe that these players can act as an upscaler for standard DVDS (is this true)
On the subject of HD, is there any way I can improve my Wii picture by using an HDMI cable or something else.
Thanks
David

Re: PS3 v Blue Ray

When blu-ray first came onto the market the ps3 was pretty much the best blu-ray player money could buy with standalone units costing nearly as much. The gap in price has increased over time as naturally happens and the specialised tech in the standalones puts it above the ps3 these days.
I'm not 100% but I don't think the ps3 upscales DVDs like the players do. So if all you want it for is the films then just buy a blu-ray player but make sure it does all the things you want it to do. Also the wii is a standard definition console so thats what it outputs, there are rumours of a Wii HD in the works though  Cool

Re: PS3 v Blue Ray

The PS3 does upscale DVD's - you need to switch it on though. I would say all other Blu players will upscale too.
In terms of value for money then then new PS3 slim as Blu player is pretty good, though you can get Blu players 100 pound or so cheaper.
With the PS3 you can get PlayTV as well which which will turn the PS3 into a freeview PVR.
I know someone with this one http://www.johnlewis.com/230650743/Product.aspx?source=14798 and it looks good.

The Wii will output at 480p with a set of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logic3-RGB-Component-Cable-Wii/dp/B000NVT0WU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames... and it looks so much better than the SD from a scart. It doesn't support HDMI.

"The Wii will output at 480p"
Or EDTV but not HDTV.
ED = Enhanced Definition

Re: PS3 v Blue Ray

Get a PS3 Slim, even today it's one of the best Blu-Ray players on the market, it's upscaling abilities are also on-par with very expensive DVD players.
Even if you never put a game in it, it's still excellent value for £230.  It does media streaming, got a web browser, and allows you to store photos, movies music and such on the internal hard disk (it also allows you to fill a huge external HDD with movies too).  In addition it's got BBC iPlayer, free online gaming, PlayTV (freeview tuner, about £40), and a seemingly endless capabilities.   The movie service launches next month too,... 🙂

Re: PS3 v Blue Ray

Like he said  Smiley If I was going to get something to play blue ray on in my living room it would be another PS3. I usually game in my dining room on a 26" HD lcd.
My living room has a 48" bravia w series but I usually don't go in their as Americas Next Top Neurotic Clothes Horse and Reality programs look sh!t to me in any definition  Grin
Its a pain taking the PS in there to watch a movie and now the price is coming down have considered get a BR player but now the PS is coming down will prob get another, like he said you just get so much more for your money.
The PS3 is far from just a gaming console these days its a full on media centre & still decent BR player.
