it's very annoying that the router has a strict nat type, any fixes that don't use port forwarding as I have tried that and have spent many hours looking for other fixes but nothing works, and the tech support team at plusnet seem to not know much about tech. So, any help?

I had that with my PS4 even though the Ps4 network test showed i had a Nat 2 games I was trying to play online like Destiny for example would state i had a strict Nat and would casue problems, I put the PS4 in a DMZ on the Plusnet router and haven't had a issue since all games show Nat 2 as it should be, Port forwrading etc doesn't work on the Plusnet router it sucks for that but at least the DMZ part does work so give that a go.
