League of Legends jitter and packet loss.

I have horrendous jitter and packet loss playing League of Legends, it makes the game totally unplayable.

My ping is consistent at about 40ms in game, however these are results for 50 icmp requests. 6% loss seems quite horrible.

Ping statistics for 95.172.65.1:
Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 47, Lost = 3 (6% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 39ms, Maximum = 66ms, Average = 43ms

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, I'm on FTTC and everything else works fine.

Thanks.

Re: League of Legends jitter and packet loss.

How are you connected, by wireless or ethernet?

Re: League of Legends jitter and packet loss.

And what version of windows are you using?

Apologies, I should have asked that with the previous question

Re: League of Legends jitter and packet loss.

OK so this is a bit of a known issue with League of Legends due to the way they manage their own internal network traffic which is more or less demonstrated by your trace as well.

Essentially I believe the LoL network utilises the UDP protocol rather than the TCP protocol which tends to result in higher packet loss due to the fact that UDP does not verify transmission and order unlike TCP.

There are a few possible things you can try which might help with this:

Firstly try connecting to a different server as it might take a better route

Secondly you could try updating your ethernet settings as per the suggestions below:

Go to:

Control Panel

Network and Internet

Network and Sharing Center

Change Adapter Settings (http://i.imgur.com/5EmtJpv.png?1?8183)

 Configure, Then advanced (http://i.imgur.com/OEpk3R9.png)

Change "Interrupt Moderation" value to Disabled (http://i.imgur.com/OEpk3R9.png)

Finally, you could test a different route by using a VPN as per this suggestion:

If you want to try out a VPN for free then I would recommend Mullvad as a simple and reliable one to use:

You can download and try the client without providing any personal or payment information and it gives you a number of exit countries to use.

Give those a whirl and see if any of those improve your situation

Re: League of Legends jitter and packet loss.

Trying a VPN is an amazing idea! Thank you! I will try it tonight when I get home from work.

I feel as though it's the route that Plusnet is passing me through rather than Riot, because nobody else I know has this issue at all, but a VPN might fix it. I will report back tonight.

Re: League of Legends jitter and packet loss.

The problem seems to have stopped for now, I did log a fault with plusnet I'm wondering if they have fixed something.

My latency to even google/bbc seems lower now, 12ms.
