Re: Lag during peak times

It is more likely this problem
Quote from: Bob
Have raised an internal problem so we can get some investigation underway (ref: 58439).
Not convinced it's a DNS issue especially in light of Steve's comments and some of the traceroute which seem to be timing out at the hop where the traffic management switches are. We did a quick health check on these yesterday and couldn't spot anything glaringly obvious but I guess we may have missed something.
There seems to be a few too many reports of problems here for something not to be wrong Sad

Re: Lag during peak times

Quote from: Barry
Interim high pings, which are followed by low pings are not *usually* a cause for concern - it means that the router is doing 'more important' things than responding to pings (like routing traffic).
When doing a tracert, if there is a router where pings elevate substantially, and all following pings are also high then that may indicate a problem.
That being said, it does seem like your pings are not stable, and the fingers are pointing to backhaul contention.    It seems like you are on ADSL and *may* benefit from ADSL2+ (the backhauls are different) so perhaps that is an option?
B.

Well for most people this wouldn't be a concern, most people wouldn't even notice. But being a gamer any flux in ping time is noticed by me and when it's as bad as it currently is it makes gaming a nightmare.
ADSL2+ is not avaible here and according to BT it won't be installed at my exchange until Q4 2011.... Sad

Re: Lag during peak times

Guess I'm stuck with this problem then? £28 a month and I can't even play quake at tea time.
Not happy.

Re: Lag during peak times

Nope, that won't work, you're already on Max Premium Sad
Can you set off a constant ping? (I can't remember the exact command but someone else here will).
I'd like to see if you're actually dropping packets.

Re: Lag during peak times

The command for constant pinging is:
ping -t <hostname / ip address>
You'll need to press CTRL-C to end the pinging-spree that ensues! Smiley

Re: Lag during peak times

Don't think I'm dropping packets because packetloss is shown on the lagometer in quake 3 as big red lines and I haven't seen any.
Pings are stable atm, heres a constant ping:

Re: Lag during peak times

Well still getting this problem, and it's alot worse now...150ms+ pings at peak time. Phone up the support line and noone even has a clue what I'm going on about.
I'm shocked how bad plus.net is. You claim gaming traffic is prioritsed....low ping ect ect....all lies....you can't even provide a stable ping let alone a low one. I don't care where the problem lies, I pay plus.net my hard earned money so I expect plus.net to fix the problem.
No doubt I'm stuck in a 18 month contract. So carry on taking my money and provide me with a sub-standard connection.
Thanks.

Re: Lag during peak times

I always have a 250ms ping in WOW on the PC, I cant play online games using my PS3 because it keeps kicking me because of lag, I am sick of it, had to give up Fifa 09 because it was unplayable now seems I have to put up with the same on Fifa 10.

Re: Lag during peak times

@goberpiles, you had a few disconnections around the time you posted, are you sure it wasn't these that caused your gaming lag/connectivity issues?

Re: Lag during peak times

My disconnections were me rebooting router to remove it from dmz, changing thr router to the [Censored] one you provided, and when I still had lag back to my Netgear router, no matter what I use I lag like hell on the Playstation 3 online.
Just been into WOW now and got 46-129 ping which is 50% lower then it is come 6pm, I have managed to play the PS3 lag free in the day so what ever my issue is it starts in the evenings.
Will try and get wireshark working today.
