Gaming awful 8pm > 10pm

Hi,
Between 20:10 and 22:10 every night for the last 6 nights my game playing has been culled due to lag, it is always the same time and always the same length of time.
My web surfing isn't affected and during this time broadband speed tests show my usual 6-7mb.
Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?
I'm assuming I could be dropping packets for some bizarre reason, but I don't know how to check that.

Hi, it's a PC game, Planetside 2, although I also have had the same problem with Minecraft a few months back.

Re: Gaming awful 8pm > 10pm

You need to Wireshark the network traffic and check that it is being put in to the correct queue. See http://community.plus.net/library/faults/using-wireshark-for-data-capture/

Re: Gaming awful 8pm > 10pm

I've placed a ticket request to get the game added, hopefully it won't take too long, I've got 2 weeks time off work over xmas.
Thanks for the help.  Cheesy

Re: Gaming awful 8pm > 10pm

I'd be surprised if we don't already have those games added. I'll ask someone to look at the capture.
edit: Sorry but we'll need a wireshark capture for the games, a list of ports isn't really sufficient.

Re: Gaming awful 8pm > 10pm

The wireshark can be done at any time. Plusnet need to look at how the traffic is categorised which won't change during the busy period. If it's wrongly categorised it will be slowed down.
Note that to make it easier for Plusnet you need to shut down everything else that will be using the network connection, start the wireshark capture and then start up the game. They need to see the game startup as that is when it is categorised.

Re: Gaming awful 8pm > 10pm

If it helps, I've been playing this game quite a lot since release, on the new unlimited profile and I've not seen any issues with latency at all.
We're on Miller EU.
Definitely get a wireshark trace of the game startup, (start Wireshark tracing before you hit the big fat 'Play' button on the launcher, and stop it tracing once you are in-game at the warpgate)

Hi Barry,
That's very strange, I'm also on Miller, between those two times in the OP it's just unusable.

Re: Gaming awful 8pm > 10pm

Which account type are you currently on?  This can make a big difference in how traffic is categorised.
Also, VS, NC or TR?  Been playing the effeminate Vanu with a large group of friends and having a blast!

Re: Gaming awful 8pm > 10pm

im getting problems again on fifa 13 and now black ops 2.(ps3)
some games on bops are ok but others there are clear problems....getting shot before someone has raced round the corner etc
fifa seems to start off fine for the early part of the first game then fluctuate throught the game.
cant run fast sometimes
the opposition players can sprint fast all game etc.
i realise it may be lag comp but i even went and tried fifa 12 where last year i had no problems.
now im getting similar problems although not quite as bad.
im at my wits end
i changed the routers firmware loads of times to test which one is better.
the latest was fine for a couple of days
very low degeneration in the quality of gameplay.
now its back to normal fluctuations.
hope it isnt variable ping.
if it is how can i sort it?
im on 60mbs and around 16mbs upload

Did the account change complete already?  It should be scheduled for your next billing date so that means you are currently on the 'old' Unlimited product.
Definitely grab a wireshark tonight when starting the game and post it up for the Networks guys to look into!
