GAMERS- HELP Whats latency like for gaming? (Switching from Virginmedia)

Hi,

Im about to switch from virginmedia.  Wondered if anyone could let me know of their experience with latency.  Im getting the 76Mb service, with estimated 57-77Mb down, 19-20Mb down and guarenteed minimum 51.2Mb.

Any idea what sort of latency I might get?  for LOL or other european servers?  I currently get on a good day: around 32ms for lol euw servers.

Im switching because virgin seems to have lost their customer focus.  Quality of service is poor, equipment awful (puma 6 chipset in routers) prices not great, deals for lapsed contracts non-existent.

Any heads up on latency would be appreciated.

cheers,

andy

Re: GAMERS- HELP Whats latency like for gaming? (Switching from Virginmedia)

Hey Andy, a warm welcome to the community forums.

I'm not a huge gamer anymore myself, so I can't personally offer guidance on what the latency is like when playing League of Legends via a Plusnet connection.

But if it helps, my housemate plays games like Warhammer Total War quite a bit on our 50.2mbps connection and I don't think he's had any problems with latency. He uses a wired connection from his PC to a Hub One via powerline adapters.

What's your speed estimate like when you input your address into the BT checker here?

Re: GAMERS- HELP Whats latency like for gaming? (Switching from Virginmedia)

Hey, Gandalf, thanks for the welcome.

The plusnet estimate is 57-77Mb downstream, 19-20Mb upstream and the guaranteed down minimum is 51.2Mb.

That BT link returns this:

VDSL Range A (Clean) 77.6 57.8 20 19 51.2 Available -- -- --
VDSL Range B (Impacted) 66.6 39.8 20 10.8 31.1 Available -- -- --

Featured Products

Downstream Line Rate(Mbps)

Upstream Line Rate(Mbps)

Downstream Range(Mbps)

WBC FTTP Availability Date

FTTP on Demand 330 30 -- Available

Any chance you could ask your housemate what sort of latency he gets? Its measured in milliseconds (ms).  The powerline adapters normally add maybe 5ms to the latency, so its a good sign if he has no problems Cheesy

thanks

andy

Sorry I missed this part of your initial post:

Im getting the 76Mb service, with estimated 57-77Mb down, 19-20Mb down and guarenteed minimum 51.2Mb.

I need bigger glasses.. Cheesy

Any chance you could ask your housemate what sort of latency he gets?

About 15ms on a speed test, and less than 100ms while gaming.

The next time he games I'll see if I can get a precise figure. Smiley

Re: GAMERS- HELP Whats latency like for gaming? (Switching from Virginmedia)

Fix

Hi Andy

I have the 76Mbps product and the download speed is always over 70Mbps , the upload speed is normally around 18.5 Mbps

i don't play many games but checking the speed using a speed test app on my iPad connected by wifi I get 20ms from a server in Amsterdam.

Checking the whitebox that that is wired to the router to monitor the connection gives 6.35ms but this is to a server in Maidenhead
