Hi all.....
9Dragons is still free to play and has been with GamersFirst (G1) since about September 2010.  Still as awesome as ever in my opinion and if you decide to spend some "hard earned" in game you can by using the item mall.  That said the game is FREE to download and play.  If you decide to have a try, join my hero league, you will need a Wu-Tang, Shaolin or League of Beggars character: -
Server = Phoenix
Hero League = Nomadic_Souls
IGN = Beardyman

FreeRealms is a great one, and very nice and colourful for kids!
EverQuest also has a free version of itself called EscapeToNorrath...
Not sure if i can post links to their direct pages or not - the latter will take a bit of searching

There are a few good free games available on steam now:
forsaken world - pretty much wow, except free and newer.
spiral knights- think diablo crossed with the original zelda, made by sega. mmo as well, looks kiddie, isnt
team fortress 2 - yeah its ftp now
alliance of valiant arms - pretty cool shooter has good co-op pve missions too
champions online - super hero mmo.
global agenda - team based mmo shooter with pvp
also fyi hellgate is going ftp as well as age of conan they just opened up the aoc blood and glory server
