Free firewall recommendations

Simply I have been using just the windows firewall as its good enough as long as the router is up to it.  But for one game I have no option but to use DMZ as the plusnet supplied TG582n port forwarding is crap and doesn't work.
So I have to look at a free firewall so my pc is safe in DMZ, so recommendations, as last software firewall I had was Blackice and dabbled with Comodo Firewall which then wasn't reliable.

Re: Free firewall recommendations

I've been trying a couple, one http://www.privacyware.com/ which I couldn't get to blackhole any port scans from anything remote that was not trusted and http://www.online-armor.com/ which does by default so went with the later for now when I use DMZ

From my experience the port forwarding has a hissy fit if uPnP is enabled. I've been on remote assistance with a customer previously trying to get them working as we'd add one port, but then it wouldn't allow us to add any more ports and it'd say that it's already assigned to a device, even though it wasn't.
So I ended up trying it with uPnP disabled, and this allowed me to open multiple ports which then worked...
Hope this might help you if you can't find a "decent" free firewall.

Matt

uPnP is never an option for me, I don't trust that feature on any router.  So I disabled it once I find it is on a router I am using.

Re: Free firewall recommendations

Can i ask then, why Plusnet have it as a feature that can be used if it doesn't work properly? Surely with Plusnet firmware it can be disabled (or hidden) or get it working properly?

Which game were you facing issues with?
I never used uPNP - horrible feature imo.
