I have the DVD of the game too, but I never used it. Always downloaded it via steam.
I have a similar setup to you.
Athlon X2 64 2.0Ghz dual core.
2Gb DDR2 ram.
nVidia 9600GT
I've not really had this problem - are your graphics drivers up to date? and does this still happen if you remove the game and re-download, or install from the DVD as its like 11gig, and its alot of bandwidth to use up.

First time didnt even get to fire my gun before it switched off second time was 5 minutes in and switched off so no luck there
Something that may be relevant after the first crash Win7 said as it was re loading " VIRTUAL MACHINE STACK OVERFLOW"
although this message didnt appear on second crash restart so dont know if it has any bearing or not.
Maybe i should give up and play Lemmings instead...................

So add the games exe to DEP and see if it helps.
DEP is an option in the Performace Option settings in Windows
