Gamers aren't catered for by +net

The whole myth about "dedicated games servers" is just that. A part of +net that runs out-of-date games that no one plays.

Running the new internal +net speed test i get excellent scores of 508kbps burst speeds, i can only imagine the near-lan ping times if and only if +net hosted some up-to-date games that people want to play like:

1. UT2003
2. America's Army OPS (leased & practice server)
3. Battlefield 1942
4. and more, just ask gamers themselves!

I may have ADSL but i'm sick of high pings from overseas servers that simply can't cope. Shocked

I've played on the F9 TFC servers and saw no difference in pings to any other server

Hi there,

> The whole myth about "dedicated games servers" is just that. A part of +net that runs out-of-date games that no one plays.

I am sorry that you feel like that, I admit that compared to dedicated games hosting companies we are not even close but in terms of playing out of date games, all the servers that we run are used.

Games like counterstrike and TFC, although they are getting old now, are still as popular as they ever were. I play medal of honour all the time but still go back to CS every now and then.

We also are running a few newer games. A full list of servers that are currently running is:

UT2003 - 212.159.6.194
MOHAA TDM - 212.159.6.206:12003
MOHAA OBJ - 212.159.6.206:12204
Counterstrike - 212.159.6.200 & 212.159.6.198
Halflife TFC - 212.159.6.197
Halflife TFC (hunted only) - 212.159.6.199

There are hundreds of UK serevers for all games, be they ours or other providers. Personally I never play on overseas servers apart from ocasionally on French Servers.

We are still working on the network, and the main problem at the moment is the fact that the network is being moved, and hence development work is hard to do but be assured we are improving.

I think the issue is that there are not enough gamers on +net. (or it needs a push start)I have never seen ne1 on tfc or cs servers, nor MOHAA for that matter and therefor moved onto other servers.(I returned MOHAA 'cos I had such an un-enjoyable time with lag etc that it put me off) If there was a thriving community there would be more interest.

During the day the MOHAA servers are always empty, but I've been playing on the Obj server in the evening.

Strangely enough though it wasn't with anyone from Plusnet, it was with a bunch of Frenchmen.

Why don't you play on the British servers then?

it's simple, i don't need to be told the obvious thank you because of course i play on the best pinged servers i can find but technically, your ISP has the absolute fastest possible connection between YOU and the INTERNET i.e. the "middle man" if you like.

Yes, that is true in the purest sense of the word but because we peer directly with Nildram, Linx, Genuity and Level 3 for bandwidth you will find that more often that not you can get external to our network just as fast. As an example:

traceroute to jolt
------------------

traceroute to clarity.jolt.co.uk (195.149.21.11), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
1 peveril-gw (192.168.0.10) 0.889 ms 0.861 ms 0.809 ms
2 pth-rb1.telehouse.core.plus.net (195.166.128.11) 17.006 ms 17.829 ms 20.600 ms
3 pth-se2.telehouse.core.plus.net (212.159.1.3) 24.808 ms 29.529 ms 19.134 ms
4 pth-gw0.telehouse.core.plus.net (195.166.129.21) 18.926 ms 19.042 ms 20.385 ms
5 lon1-9.nildram.net (195.66.224.59) 19.924 ms 20.517 ms 19.138 ms
6 jolt-gw.nildram.net (195.149.20.126) 19.907 ms 19.463 ms 20.388 ms
7 clarity.jolt.co.uk (195.149.21.11) 21.401 ms 23.164 ms 22.582 ms

tracerouter to our servers
--------------------------
traceroute to stella.games.plus.net.uk (212.159.6.206), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
1 peveril-gw (192.168.0.10) 0.892 ms 0.860 ms 0.805 ms
2 pth-rb1.telehouse.core.plus.net (195.166.128.11) 17.284 ms 17.820 ms 18.868 ms
3 pth-se1.telehouse.core.plus.net (212.159.1.2) 22.319 ms 28.202 ms 19.625 ms
4 pth-gw0.telehouse.core.plus.net (195.166.129.21) 19.407 ms 18.579 ms 19.897 ms
5 atm.core.plus.net (212.159.1.65) 25.573 ms 26.093 ms 24.071 ms
6 212.159.15.250 (212.159.15.250) 23.615 ms 25.314 ms 25.057 ms
7 stella.games.plus.net.uk (212.159.6.206) 24.834 ms 24.760 ms 24.055 ms

Both of these are done from a normal home ADSL account, and if you discount the first hop (which is an ADSL router) then it is 6 hops of roughly the same duration to both servers.

The upshot of this is that picg times for gaming should be excellent to many UK servers, hosted with us and elsewhere.
