Ethernet cable for xbox to PC for Xbox Live

I know this is not exactly relative to this part of the forum, but i guessed some of your guys must of needed to do the same thing so i thought i'd post this.

I'm going to connect my xbox to PC direct and i need to run some of the ethernet cable outside my house. Does anyone know of a cable that is suitable for the oudoors or maybe some sort of covering for the wire?

its going to have to be between 15-20 metres long.

if you have any suggestions please let me know

thanx Wink

if your not going to put a Ethernet switch inbetween them, then your going to need a crossover cat5 cable.

If you going to stick a switch in then you'll just need two regular cat 5 leads. I'd reccomend putting a switch in, as you can get them brand new for about £20 ( 5 port ) these days and that leaves you with some expansion, for wifi and all that other good stuff Smiley

Thier all water proof in the middle not so much at the ends.

The only outdoor specific cat5 you can get is properly armoured stuff and that properly expensive. I have a couple of feed running from loft to first and ground floor, round the back of drain pipes. They use normal cat5 no problems there.

the other option ( which i did for a while ) is a couple of WiFi AP's with WDS enabled to link rooms/floors of a house. Which works but wifi is so bursty its infinately better to use cable. ( plus you get interference from DECT phones, microwaves, digital video senders etc etc )

Or get some cable trunking / conduit to cover the outside bit .. you can get it from places like screwfix and the like. If you run cabling outside and it gets danaged by accident (high winds for example) then it will reduce the performance of the network and could cause packet loss and such.
