Re: WiFi Dropouts and slow down

Hi. I have got the Ookla Speed test App on my phone anyway but since the problem started it hasn't been able to actually do a speed test over WiFi. I'll keep trying though. Thanks

Ian

Ah, using not setting up.

The SSID is the network name you see in the connect to wifi options on a device.

Ah I see, you mean PLUSNET-35CKJM? That's what's on the new Router and what I'm using to try and connect.

Re: WiFi Dropouts and slow down

Just to provide an update to this, for everyone. I've just been on the phone again to Plusnet. Apparently they hadn't furthered the query because someone there had wrongly recorded it as an ont mismatch problem. Anyway, as if by magic, an OpenReach Engineer is coming tomorrow afternoon. Fingers crossed!

Re: WiFi Dropouts and slow down

It would be helpful if you can "grill" the engineer...

  • How has the fault been described
  • What has he been tasked to do
  • What did he do (if you get any changes)
  • How can a fault occur at ONT / fibre level - briefly - which does not drop the PPP connection

I am intrigued that someone somewhere thinks that this is a WAN side / infrastructure issue.  This has potential for building forum knowledge.

I'm intrigued totally. Will be interesting if/when we get a resolution.

Re: WiFi Dropouts and slow down

A small update. The engineer hasn't been yet, he's coming later, but he's just rang me. Before I said anything he asked if I was with Plusnet, then he described the exact problem I've been having. He said that he'd had quite a few calls out over the past few weeks, from Plusnet customers, with the same problem. He mentioned something about having to have a static IP address although he also said he hadn't worked out what the exact problem was for the other customers. He was saying it seems like a problem with the Plusnet Hub 2 routers.

He's sill coming this afternoon so I'll update later.

Re: WiFi Dropouts and slow down

I am a little concerned about this engineer - Plusnet no longer issue static IP's. Can you get as much detail from him as possible, please?

Re: WiFi Dropouts and slow down

There have been some fringe issues due to BT dynamic IP address distribution errors, but that was a while back.  Allocation of a static IP address would have resolved the specific issue I recall.

Before lending weight to the engineer’s suggestion, we would need to see the first 3 octets of the IP address, to raise with the appropriate PN staff.

The issue I recall would give rise to non-responsiveness over the internet, but it would be very sever.

Re: WiFi Dropouts and slow down

I'm not so sure an Openreach engineer would be involved in IP Addressing as that is account based, why would they need to know that?

Is it as if who ever is visiting is setting the narrative to 'No Fault Found'

@ijb59

Is your visit confirmed as Openreach or Qube/Circet or someone else?

@Dan_the_Van You have made me wonder now. I shall be interested to see how this transpires, but it doesn't sound promising.

Re: WiFi Dropouts and slow down

@Dan_the_Van

A BT dynamic IP address distribution across their infrastructure issue a few months ago gave rise to some very odd ball issues … which might have some similarities to this.  In those circumstances a DHCP reserved address (remembering our discussion on “static IP” meaning Wink ) mitigated the issue.

A very savvy engineer might have knowledge of that scenario.

IP address allocation is only done at account level when there’s a “static” IP address.  Otherwise it’s allocated randomly by the local network radius server within BT’s network.

The visit was confirmed by text and email by Openreach.

Re: WiFi Dropouts and slow down

@Townman Good point - I had forgotten that 'glitch'.

@ijb59 So it will be an OR engineer - good.
