Why are plusnets maxiumum speeds slower than Virgin?

I am very happy with my plusnet service... Good value and service.

I am just curious to know why virgin have such faster top available speeds than plusnet when they both run on fibre optics.

In my case I am on the fibre to the door trial so in theory there is no reason why it can't run faster?

Thanks

I believe FTTP is technically capable of up to 1Gbps.  Plusnet are still only offering fttp on a trial basis and have decided for the time being to only offer a product with comparable speeds to the normal FTTC product. I believe other suppliers of fttp will offer a 300Mbps product but it is considerably more expensive.

@drFishFlan

Virgin have their own network and are free to offer whatever speed they want.

Those ISP's using the OpenReach have a choice of wholesale products at different speeds. PlusNet simply uses the standard 40/10 & 80/20 options (same as FTTC). Can't say offhand what the two normal higher speeds are but if you were to look at BT Retail you would see.
