What’s the Fibre Like?

I’ve an engineer’s appointment in a week or so to install my FTTP. My house (bungalow) has the phone line coming via a pole at the end of the garden to the apex of my gable and I’m hoping the engineer will agree to bring the fibre in the same way as that’s where my cat6 wiring presently terminates. I want to make any helpful preparations in advance.

So what does the fibre from the pole look like? Assuming that he’s happy to fit everything (both boxes) in the loft what size of hole through the wall would it need and would it need any protection or is it tough enough on its own? The phone cable and TV coax just come through a gap between 2 bricks and they’ve survived like that for nearly 50 years. How is it secured to the house to take the strain of the line from the pole (about 30 metres or so). What’s the tightest curvature radius it could manage?

@quelquod

First and foremost - is the loft floored, have easy access and space to work in? Also, is there a power supply available.

The cable can be brought in via the existing copper cable entry beofre it gets stripped back to the fibre element.

Just have a good story ready for the installer and hope they are able to work with you.

Re: What’s the Fibre Like?

The usual disposition is the the CSP (joint box between the incoming fibre and the internal fibre) must be positioned externally and at ground level.

There has though been a number of reports recently of more flexible arrangements where a different CSP box has been installed internally.  There is also a building regs consideration that the external fibre cable is not fire retardant.

The best approach is to have a good supply of hob nobs and chat to the engineer.  When my business service was installed, the external fibre cable was brought to the eves run across the gable end, down and then along the side of the extension to the CSP.  The internal fibre was then taken inside … and run back into the middle of the main building.  Cracking job done by Kelly Communications.
