Ticket update 162004457

Apologies if I’m chasing this too soon.

If I’m honest, I’m highly skeptical over whether it will be possible for FTTP to be installed so I’m really keen to hear any updates and whether any survey has been carried out.

Kind regards,

Gavin

Re: Ticket update 162004457

If you look at the DSL Checker does it have a column headed "FTTP Install Progress" (should say either "1 stage" or "2 stage"). Also what does the narrative under the results day about FTTP

Can’t see anything referring to results day?

Re: Ticket update 162004457

@gavcuk

"1 stage" usually refers to only one visit required to install FTTP whereas an older method requires two. The new method is referred to as  "connectorisation" where one end of the fibre cable has a factory installed connector to connect to the Distribution Point and after the cable is run to and into your house the other end is connected to an Optical Network Terminator (ONT).

As for "results day" it might read better and make more sense if I had typed "results say" - the narrative should have something which gives a clue to how easy (or otherwise) an install might be. Mine had "UG proven clear" which I knew (as the chamber is outside my neighbours house) means "underground duct proven clear - mine had a draw rope left in place.

Our records show the following FTTP network service information for these premises:- Single Dwelling Unit Residential UG Feed Not Evaluated.

Re: Ticket update 162004457

OK, so they won't know if they can run cable through the duct until they turn up to do an install. One of my neighbour's had a blocked duct when they checked but they were able to push through from the other end. Age and length of duct might play a part but only time will tell.

Re: Ticket update 162004457

Does that refer to the BT manhole 10-15m away from the house? Should I assume that fibre runs to there but they have to evaluate how to get it to my house or could it mean fibre has yet to be run from the cabinet to my road (likely 2km length)

Hopefully, the former 😬

Re: Ticket update 162004457

FTTP cabling does not run from your phone cabinet but from the nearest Internet Point of Presence. Fibre cable is run to the general area and then individual Distribution Points and connected to the main cable at an Aggregation Point. The following website gives some idea of what's involved.

http://blog.thinkbroadband.com/2016/06/a-peek-at-the-future-world-of-openreach-fttp/

A DP should have been installed near your home. If not in the nearest chamber then one very close by. In the link above you'll see a picture of a UG chamber with 3 DP's installed. Two 8 port / nodes and one 4 port / node. The chamber in my neighbour's garden has one 8 node DP for 7 houses.

Given that FTTP is showing as available then the equipment must be in place and the network live. A fibre cable is run from the chamber through the duct used for your phone line. After it gets to your house they drill through the wall to bring it inside.

Re: Ticket update 162004457

Awesome Brian, thank you for that response. This gives me a much better understanding and increased belief this will actually happen.

I had a disaster fibre installation when FTTC was enabled where the speeds were lower than my terrible ADSL (as if that were possible!) Eventually they agreed to switch back to ADSL and I resigned myself to forever being in a digital blackspot.

Had better not get too ahead of myself but quietly optimistic now.

There are few PlusNet FTTP trained staff so it can take a while to get a response.

Keep an eye on "View open Questions" on your PlusNet Members page (under Support).

Re: Ticket update 162004457

Apologies for the delayed appointment confirmation on the ticket, however it does look like the order is committed for the date that was provisionally booked.

I'll get confirmation of that sent to you shortly Thumbs_Up

Re: Ticket update 162004457

Harry, given I’m taking a day of holiday on Wednesday for this installation can you please confirm the engineer hasn’t had to rearrange last minute as that will be something of an inconvenience?

Kind regards,
Gavin

Re: Ticket update 162004457

Happy to report it’s working like a charm.

Worth noting that according to the Openreach guy this was not a 1 stage install. He had to call out someone else to run the fibre from the end of the road to my house and there was no rope in place for a pull through.

Re: Ticket update 162004457

Although fine for the first hour it has now dropped down significantly to lower than my ADSL speed.

Upload is fine
