Speed on PS5

Trying to download a game on the PS5 and download is 28.71gb and it’s going to take nearly an hour? Surly it should be better that was the point in upgrading. Im currently paying for fiber300. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Speed on PS5

@ke33eta Are you sure the download speed isn't showing as 28.71MB (capital B for byte) as that would make the speed in the correct area for your 300Mbps ( 300 mega bits per second ) link?

The maths is 8 bits per byte so 28.81MBps is 28.81 *8 Mbps but you have a 2 bit per byte overhead so the download speed would be 287.1Mbps.

Re: Speed on PS5

It shows it as 4.80GB/28.71GB (55 mins remaining) so guessing it means that it has done 4.80GB of 28.71GB and it’s going to take 55mins?

Re: Speed on PS5

Would take about 15 minutes at headline speed.

That said, how is the PS5 connected to the router? If it's Wireless, then that could be dragging the download speed down depending on conditions. If it's wired, what cable are you using? e.g. Cat-5e/Cat-6 etc.

Even wired, I've found console download speeds to be pretty variable. I don't have a PS5 (I'm in the Xbox ecosystem), however it's rare I see Xbox downloads anywhere near the 900mbps my line is capable of (and the console is wired directly to the router).

Re: Speed on PS5

@ke33eta That's correct - that is saying that you have yet to download 24GB and it will take 55 minutes to complete.

Re: Speed on PS5

@SpendLessTime that’s what I thought so it’s basically not downloading very quickly considering…

Re: Speed on PS5

According to Bob, it is 25% of the maximum speed. Have you looked at his comments as he is the expert in routers here.

Re: Speed on PS5

I have a hard wired PS5 with the fibre 900 product and at times it only shows 400.
Download times for updates are all over the place to be honest and it's unrelated to performance of the PN connection.

Re: Speed on PS5

Firstly I want to thank you all for your reply’s. I have tried doing several speed tests and only getting about 30-40 mbps. The last one I have done this evening is 16mbps download with an upload of 7.67. I fully get that I’m doing this wirelessly but surly if I’m paying for full fibre 300 it should be better if not what’s the point as most things are now wireless!? Any ideas

Re: Speed on PS5

For gaming an ethernet connection is the best way to go.
Even WiFi6 won't give you the performance of a wired connection.
On FTTC I thought the slow download speeds on my Xbox were just the way it was with MS servers but on FTTP 500 I quite often get 400-449mbps.
With regard to your reference about WiFi, there are still plenty of devices that only run on 2.5ghz (even my IP cameras only run at 2.5ghz) let alone 5ghz devices whereas in most cases 1gbit ethernet has been supported by devices for years.
I didn't pay overall attention to the recent Window 11 updates but my desktop on a wired connection downloaded it a lot faster than my laptop did, you get my point.
