Like email you’d be far better off decoupling your phone number from your isp and using a VoIP provider and using your own equipment

@DaveB1 Zen? I know they supply a Fritz!box which is extremely capable, but they do not mandate you use it. Nor do they directly supply a VoIP  service - you find your own.

According to their website , they now offer a Digital voice product that uses the Fritzbox capability.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Totally agree but how? There doesn't seem to be any mechanism for doing this with Plusnet. Hopefully it will get through to those who make these decisions that the current situation just won't work in the longer term.

I have just helped a neighbour who has been put on the Sky VoIP service. This works fine, first with two old third party analog phones, though linking the extension phone cable in was a pain as there's not enough clearance to plug a standard 1 to 2 adapter in to the hub. I have now replaced the two with a BT call blocker phone with wireless extensions.

Interested to hear more on this.  If it is PPPoE, how come you can't use any valid PPPoE device with BT or Sky?

I never use any ISP email. I always use both Gmail and GMX for my own personal email. As for phone number, if FTTP come along, I don't need phone number. I will use my own mobile number.

 

Why do peoples want to keep phone number along with full fibre? Surely they can use mobile phone number instead?

Sorry if I did nit make this clear.

The only way you can access a BT or Sky supplied VOIP service is by using the socket on the supplied router that is then plugged into the ONT. You can only replace the router with your own equipment if you use a third party Voip supplier or do not use a phone line.

I don't see any problem there - if you are happy to use the BT/Sky router and their VoIP service - fine. If you do not use the phone service, you can use any compatible equipment and any other VoIP service you wish - or like I will, when FTTP becomes available to me, and IF I switch, just use your mobile. As a point of interest, that is what I do now, the landline is only used by a couple of my regular callers, all other contacts use my mobile number.

In my case SWMBO has no idea what FTTP or FTTC is. All she is aware of is that we have Internet access and a landline phone.  We have had the same phone number for over 45 years and everyone with a need knows it. It is connected to a base station with an answering machine and call guardian, there are four handsets located around the house. Neither of us carts a mobile phone around the house all day and night.

In my case it would be a deal breaker if I couldn’t simply transfer the current phone number and phone hardware to a VoIP service as available from Sky. As it happens our exchange is not currently on any published BT FTTP future upgrade plans.

I appreciate that this is a generation issue as some of we oldies don’t feel naked unless we are attached to a mobile.

The problem of not being able to decouple your phone number from your broadband provision is not unique to PlusNet, it's with all ISPs that offer Openreach based FTTC/FTTP.

 

It's something Ofcom have totally failed to mandate a mandatory procedure for. They've failed to think things through properly (as ever)

Let’s not start singing from the Plusnet hymn sheet here. This is not a generational matter but one of consumer choice (or the lack of it). Change is being forced on users with no provision for the assurance of continuity of existing service facilities. You make the point well - people do not want to cart their mobile around the house, especially if they have DECT phones where they need them.

The “everyone has a mobile” mantra totally falls apart if you live in a mobile not-zone. I was on holiday in Craster last week - zero mobile coverage at all. No land line either. Not every mobile phone supports WiFi calling (particularly Plusnet mobiles). Dismissing the need for a landline to be restricted to the old foggies is exactly what Plusnet want users to accept. It’s not on!

With cooperation decoupling phone number from FTTC on migration to FTTP is not unachievable if it’s provided for. There has historically been the means of migrating phone service provision separate from broadband - there seems to be no technical reason why migration of a phone number to VOIP could not be coordinated with a migration to FTTP.

For that matter, it ought to be possible to add FTTP to an account whilst retaining copper services … for a few … to facilitate user managed migration to VoIP.

Not "all ISPs" are incapable of going the extra mile to achieve the desired outcome ,  for example - A&A : Porting Landlines to VoIP

The whole point of a POTS landline connection is knowing that if you lift the receiver you get dialtone. This is with a probability of something like five nines. The mobile system is nothing like that.
