Re: Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

PPPoE still not successful:

Setup:

Interface: PPPoE

Ethernet: USB 10/100/1000 LAN  (on a mac so USB ethernet via USB adaptor)

Service name: PPPoe

Configuration:

PPoE service name: [blank]

Account name: [my broadband username]@plusdsl.net

Password: My PN login password

TCP/IP

Configure IPv4: Using PPP

Configure IPv6: Automatically

DNS

All blank

WINS

My laptop

Workgroup: workgroup

WINS servers: No WINS servers

Proxies

All off

PPP

Connect automatically when needed: off

Prompt to maintain the connection: off

Disconnect when use logs out: on

Disconnect when switching user accounts: on

Send PPP echo packets: on

Use verbose logging: off

Trying to connect using these settings I get the error: " Could not find a PPPoE server."

Re: Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

@jwalowe76

Did you disable the wireless connection.

I have tried a PPPoE connection from a raspberry pi today using my PPPoE server.

I found that I have to enable "Connect automatically" for the PPPoE to connect.

Re: Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

Thanks @Dan_the_Van, I changed to connect automatically but get the same again.

I think though it's much more likely to be user error with the PPoE connection. I'm not entirely illiterate, but networking remains a dark art to me...

Interesting development on speed test this morning (July 16th):

- BT Wholesale: ping 15ms, 105.84Mbps download (Hooray!), 7.73up

BUT

- Ookla: 18ms ping, 5.57mbps download, 24.43 up

- Fast.com: 18ms ping, 38Mbps download, 23 up

It did this before for about a day and a half, but then went back to being sub 1Mbps an all tests.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Two days ago BT wholesale speed test sub 1mbps, yesterday 0Mbps and today 105?! Clearly this is not an equipment issue on my end?

Re: Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

Hopefully solved:

My third router arrived today and it seems to have fixed the problem. I can't quite believe the odds that I had two broken Plusnet Hub Two's, but there we are! Only caveat is that it all worked perfectly once before and went back to sub 1Mbps, so I'll believe my luck after a few days...

Currently though wired speeds are:

BT Wholesale: 130ms ping, download 119.65Mbps, 29.73 up

Ookla: ping 15ms, download 149.55Mbps down, 28.74 up

Fast.com: 38ms ping, download 150Mbps, 27 up

Fingers crossed that this stays so good!

Thanks again to @Dan_the_Van , @MisterW@jab1 @James30  and @MatthewWheeler

I'll post again in a few days when I know for sure it's all stable.

Re: Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

@jwalowe76 Good news, but those results, to me, point to the BTw tester being slightly wrong somehow - 130 ping as against 15 for the Ookla (good) or 38 for Fast.com (a little high, but not excessive).

Yes John I see what you mean - seems odd to me too. I'll give it a few days before I break out the the champagne...

Thanks again @jab1

Re: Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

A final update on this problem for anyone that's still interested...

After much faffing with engineers visits and escalations PN sent me a third Plusnet Hub Two, which, magically, fixed the problem.

It turns out I got two duff routers in a row. The odds of that happening must be astronomical, so I'm not buying a lottery ticket for a while.

Thanks to all who spend so long helping out.

Re: Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

Well, it looks like I spoke too soon.

Four weeks later (now on my third Plusnet Hub Two), my speeds are:

BT Wholesale

Down: 2.22 Mbps, Up: 30.15

Ookla

Down: 5.35 Mbps, Up: 28.69

Oddly if I connect with a VPN (Express) I get:

BT Wholesale

Down: 75.25 Mbps, Up: 26.27

Ookla

Down: 128.6 Mbps(!!!), Up: 27.14

However, after a few minutes on the VPN connection, the speeds drop again to the same slow speed.

Any thoughts  @Dan_the_Van , @MisterW@jab1 @James30  and @MatthewWheeler ?Huh

I've pretty much given up on the Plusnet Two Hub and have ordered a third part router (TP Link AX3000) which arrives tomorrow. This MUST be some kind of throttling no?

Re: Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

Well, it looks like I spoke too soon...

Four weeks later (and my third Plusnet Hub Two), and my speeds have plummeted.

BT Wholesale

Down: 1.36 Mpbs, Up: 28.71

Ookla

Down:  4.62 Mpbs, Up: 28.79

Oddly, when I connect with a VPN (Express) I get:

BT Wholesale

Down: 38.10 Mbps, Up: 24.59

Ookla

Down: 126.88(!!!), Up: 27.11

But after a few minutes the VPN speeds also plummet.

I've given up on the Plusnet Hub Two router and have ordered a third-party replacement (TP Link AX3000).

Meanwhile, can anyone shed any light on this? Surely this is some kind of throttling?  @Dan_the_Van , @MisterW@jab1 @James30  and @MatthewWheeler ?

Re: Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

@jwalowe76

you said

"Ethernet: USB 10/100/1000 LAN  (on a mac so USB ethernet via USB adaptor)"

How old is this unit and what brand.

Have you tried a direct connection to the ont via ethernet and create a pppoe connection on your mac.

Is your wife's lappy a pc or mac?

Also whilst you have this issue - do not test via vpn, its only confusing us and yourself. Vpn speeds can vary wildly

Re: Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

New router installed and back up to speed:

Ookla

Down: 121.55 Mbsp, Up: 27.87

BT

Down: 114.40 Mbps, Up: 29.67

That's now my third Plusnet hub Two that has failed.

Re: Newly installed FTTP under 1MBPS

It will be interesting to see how the TP-Link does. I've not used one but it looks decent.

I've a slightly mature MacBook Air (2015) and an Apple USB1 to Ethernet adaptor. That seem to be limited to 100Mb/s.

I find with the MacBook Air the WiFi is considerably faster on speedtests.

I am the satisfied customer....

I can't believe that's the case. I suspect the issue is elsewhere, and just coincidentally improved (for a while) with a change of router.

It might be worth checking the MTU on your PC's connection - if that is higher than supported by the path to whatever server you connect to, the result would be a very slow connection speed.
