Full fibre issues with connection, and using VR2800 modem

I've just upgraded to full fibre and face two separate issues.

When using the supplied hub2, every device in my home connects apart from one laptop. It connects to the wifi and says connected, but it does not resolve websites.  Going into the admin interface, it shows it connected to the hub but no data is being transmitted.

I can ping 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 but nslookups do not work

It's as if it thinks it's connected but isn't connected.

DHCP on the laptop is set to dynamic

Laptop has been restarted several times

Network reset has been done inside of Windows.

The second issue is that I've tried to swap out the hub for my archer VR2800 router.

Set it to wifi mode

Connected the fibre cable to WAN on the router.

VLan ID: 101

I cannot get the router to connect at all to the fibre line. There are numerous instructions online which I've followed but it completely refuses to connect.

Fix

@paulcreedy You do not set VLAN on an FF connection - that should be set to 'off' or 'disabled' on your VR2800.

Re: Full fibre issues with connection, and using VR2800 modem

That was it. Amazing.

The number of instructions I found saying to enable vland id 101, and the answer was to disable it.

The fixed the issue with using my own router instead of the hub2, and all my devices including the laptop are back online.

It would be great to know why only one device wouldn't work with the hub2 but all the others did.

@paulcreedy

The Openreach ONT provides VLAN 101.

With regards to the VR2800, this is old hardware, it's performance might suffer with higher speed Full Fibre connections.(500 or 900).

Re: Full fibre issues with connection, and using VR2800 modem

Hi

I'm on a 300 line so should be okay with that I think. The reason to keep the VR2800 is that it has an ftp feature which I use to remotely backup photos directly from my camera to a usb connected ssd drive at home, and it has two usb ports for ssd storage.  The camera has an ftp upload option

Unfortunately the hub doesn't have ftp as far as I can tell, so until I can afford an upgrade the vr2800 is a better option than their hub2.  The vr2800 also seems to have a stronger wifi signal.

Thanks for the heads up though, and for getting it working.
